3 Adjective and Adverbs Remember: Adjective modify nouns. Adverbs modify everything else-verbs, adjectives, and other adverbs. Hint: To decide if a word is an adjective simply put the word your are not sure about in the following sentence: He is very____________________. If the word fits in the blank, then the word is an adjective. He is very intelligent. He is very intelligently.

4 Comparative Adjectives
A comparative adjective is often used when a sentence is comparing two things. Rosa is taller than Jane. In general, if an adjective has only one syllable, you can make it comparative by adding an – “er” to the end of the word. If an adjective has more than one syllable, you can usually make it comparative by adding “more” or “less” in front of the adjective. Sid is more careful than Tom. Tom is less careful than Sid.

5 Comparative Adverbs A comparative adverb is often used when a sentence is comparing two actions. Rosa dances more gracefully than Jane. (“More gracefully” is a comparative adverb. To make most adverbs comparative, you also need to add a “more” or “less” in front of the adverb. Sid behaves more politely than Tom does. Tom behaves less politely than Sid does.

6 Superlative Adjectives and Adverbs
When more than two things are being compared, a sentence needs a superlative adjective. Of the many men in the room, John is the strongest. (“Strongest” is a superlative adjective.) To make a comparison among three or more people or things, add “-est” to the adjective. When more than two actions are being compared, a sentence often needs a superlative adverb. Compared with the other boys in the school, Sid behaves the most politely. (“Most politely” is a superlative adverb.)

8 Practice “When I woke up it was light. It was awfully quiet. Too quiet. I mean, our house just isn’t naturally quiet. The radio’s usually going full blast and the TV is turned up loud and people are wrestling and knocking over lamps and tripping over the coffee table and yelling at each other. Something was wrong, but I couldn’t quite figure it out. Something had happened…I couldn’t remember what. Hinton, The Outsiders Hinton starts the passage with two short sentences, a sentence fragment, and another short sentence. Then she writes two longer sentences. Look at these sentences carefully, and contrast the purpose of the short sentences/fragment and the purpose of the longer sentences. How does the sentence length reinforce the meaning of the passage? Hinton uses ellipses (…) in the last sentence to show that something has been left out. What has been left out? How do you know?

9 Literary Devices Allegory- an extended narrative in prose or verse in which characters, events, and settings represent abstract qualities and in which the writer intends a second meaning to be read beneath the surface of the story; the underlying meaning may be moral, religious, political, social, or satiric. Example: In the New Testament, Christ makes frequent use of the parable to make statements about “people” in general. For example, the Good Samaritan is an allegory representing the right thinking and compassionate person. Characterization- An author or poet’s use of description, dialogue, dialect and action to create in the reader an emotional or intellectual reaction to a character or to make the character more vivid and realistic. Careful readers note each character’s attitude and thoughts, actions and reaction, as well as any language that reveals geographic, social, or cultural background.

10 Symbolism- Use of symbols or anything that is meant to be taken both literally and as representative of a higher and ore complex significance. Theme- The central idea or “message” of a literary work. The theme should be expressed in 1-4 words. The Great Gatsby- Decline of the American Dream Tone- The characteristic emotion or attitude of the author toward the characters, subject, and audience (angry, sarcastic, loving, etc) Romeo and Juliet romantic and foreboding

11 Diction-Word choice, an element of style; it creates tone, attitude, and style as well as meaning. Different types and arrangements of words have significant effects on meaning. An essay written using academic diction would be much less colorful, but perhaps more precise than street slang. Point of View- The perspective from which a story is presented
