4. HOW EMOTIONALLY RESILIENT IS YOUR CHILD?
Last year:
27 students in Yrs. 10 and 11 had a range of mental health issues/illnesses including: -
eating disorders
depression
self-harming
SOME OF THESE PROBLEMS WERE RELATEDTO/EXACERBATED BY ILLEGAL DRUG USE

5. School Counsellor
Started September 2012
Increased from 2 day provision to 3 day
Students/ Parents request School Counsellor service
/ ring Mr. Donald if interested
Waiting times

6. HOW TO HELP Ask subject staff if you are unsure
Keep your child’s tutor/LM informed of any changes which might affect your child’s study or examination success
Use planners/ / phone to communicate with staff whenever a concern arises
PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE
Be aware of the enormous stress students are under especially if combining with part-time jobs, hobbies etc.
Avoid unnecessary absences- changes to legislation- ‘exceptional circumstances’
Strike a balance- all work and no play....

A diagnostic red/amber/green system of identifying students emotionally/attitudinally ‘at risk’

PREPAREDNESS FOR LEARNING TOOLS TO DO THE JOB – STUDY SKILLS, INCLUDING ATTENTIVENESS, POWERS OF CONCENTRATION. CORRELATES MOST CLOSELY WITH BEHAVIOURAL DIFFICULTIES IN CLASS

ATTITUDES TO ATTENDANCE VERY HIGH CORRELATION WITH ACTUAL ATTENDANCE
RESPONSE TO CURRICULUM DEMANDS SECOND MOTIVATIONAL FACTOR TO UNDERTAKE AND COMPLETE TASKS SET WITHIN SCHOOL CURRICULUM

11. WHAT NOW/NEXT? PASS survey planned for early 2015
Identified students will be interviewed by Learning Manager/Tutor, using scripted questions
Intervention strategies put in place as appropriate – e.g. staff/student relationship issue
