Locate Point Using a Global Grid:
Set of lines used to identify locations on maps. A B C D E F 1 2 3 4 5 6 Grid systems are used to find exact locations. They are made of two lines that xross eachother. The global grid system we use to locate position on Earth is called longitude and latitude

The Compass Rose: Gives us orientation
Cardinal Directions: North, East, South and West Intermediate Directions: lie between cardinal directions. NW, NE, SW, SE For instance NW is half way between north and west. How are cardinal directions and intermediate directions the same. They are all direction. How are they different? Intermediate directions are based on cardinal directions. Where have you seen cardinal directions or the cardinal rose before? When have you used it?

Latitude and Longitude
Refer to imaginary lines around Earth that help locate specific points and places on its surface.

Latitude (aka parallels)
Distance north or south of the equator and form east-west circles around the globe. Each degree of latitude is about 69 miles apart. Lines are parallel so they never cross. What is the most important line of latitude? Equator or zero degree line of latitude

EQUATOR Equator: aka the “zero degree” latitude line
Half way between the North and South Poles. Widest circumference on the globe. The most important line of latitude. Each line on the globe is labeled for its distance north or south of the Equator. Refer to the globes or papers with globe passed out to the class.

Longitude (aka meridians)
Distance east or west of the Prime Meridian and form north-south lines that run between the North Pole and South Pole. Widest apart at the equator. The north and south lines do meet at both poles.

Prime Meridian Passes through Greenwich, England Measures longitude, the distance east or west of the Prime Meridian Earth’s time zones are measured from the prime meridian The time at 00 is called Universal Time (UT) or Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). International agreement that the prime meridian would fall on Greenwich England runs right through an observatory.

How is Latitude and Longitude Measured?
Measured in “degrees” (unit that measures angles) AND “Minutes” measure smaller degrees. Ex: 38054’N 38 degrees, 54 minutes, North Latitude This is the absolute location of the Capitol Building in Washington DC

Latitude Lines: Measured 0-900 North or 0-900 South of the equator.
Longitude Lines: Measured 1800 East or West of the prime meridian.
