What are SATs? The achievements of children in Year 2 and Year 6 are assessed at the end of Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2. The children sit national test papers. They measure children’s understanding from across Key Stage 1 (Years 1 and 2) Assessment tests are written by examiners. The children complete them in school and they are marked by the teachers.
4
What is tested? There are 4 mains areas that are tested
Reading – mainly the ability to understand and comprehend what has been read Maths – this will involve a mental arithmetic paper and a reasoning paper. Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar – this will involve a spelling test and a punctuation and grammar test Writing – this includes handwriting and spelling. There is NOT a writing test, this is based on the work the children produce through the year.
5
How will these tests be carried out?
Anytime in May 2018. Familiar environment. Small groups or whole class. Teacher assessment.
6
Maths – how can you help?
7
Home Reading Your child will read to their class teacher/learning support assistant at least once a week. Other members of staff e.g. DRA’s will also listen to your children read. Your child should read at home as often as possible for no longer than 10 minutes. When challenges are set they should be completed at home to help develop understanding and reading skills.
8
Reading diary There is a list of questions that you can ask your child when they have finished reading. When you have heard your child read please record this in the reading diary. Make a note of the pages read and how well they did/anything they struggled with.
9
Spelling Tests Spelling tests are given every Friday (Week 1-6)
Spellings can be found in the children’s homework folders – remember take these out when you hand the folder in OR perhaps take a photo/copy them out for reference at home Children MUST practise at home. We strive for 10/10 each week and the children will be rewarded. Learning spellings will allow the children to make good progress in their writing.

Handwriting All of the children are now using a cursive script style in their handwriting. They are aiming to achieve a pen license.
13
Homework Homework is sent home weekly on a Friday afternoon.
Children are expected to do their homework over the weekend and return to school. We kindly ask that all homework is returned by Wednesday the following week. Please support your child with their homework – BUT do not do it for them. It is to help them learn and consolidate learning from the week.
14
School Uniform
15
P.E kit EVERY MONDAY What should a P.E kit include?
Trainers or pumps – they CANNOT wear their school shoes. A t-shirt – they CANNOT wear their school t-shirt. This is unhygienic. Jogging bottoms OR shorts depending on preference/the weather.
16
Swimming kit EVERY TUESDAY What should a swimming kit include?
A swimming costume for girls/swimming trunks for boys. A towel large enough to dry themselves. A swimming hat for girls. This is for hygiene & to keep the pool clean and safe. N.B. It would be ideal for girls to wear their hair in a bun on Tuesdays as this makes it easier to put swimming hats on. Also the girls have found it quite tricky to put tights on after swimming so perhaps trousers would be more practical.
17
Trips and Visits We have some exciting visits and trips booked in for this school year. Please ensure that any money and forms are returned by the date on the letter. Spring Term – Ironbridge, Coventry (Transport museum, cathedral, Lady Godiva statue etc.) Summer Term –Twycross Zoo
18
School Library In Year 2 we strive to take the children to the school library each week. Your child is allowed to take a library book out of the library and bring it home. The are allowed to keep this book at home for 2 weeks – after this time they will need to return the book to school otherwise they will incur a late charge fee.
19
Blog Your children’s username and passwords are in the front of their reading diaries. These are powerful tools that the children like to use. You should be encouraging your child to respond to blog posts daily. Sit down yourself with them once in a while because it will help you to understand what they have been learning.
20
Blog The school website is used to share the children’s super learning and to challenge them. It is also used to share messages with parents. For example:
21
Purple Mash A new resource. Homework can be set. Lots of tutorials.
22
Education City Pupils love it. Homework can be set.
Ready to go activities.
23
Skoolbo Skoolbo is a fantastic tool to rehearse and practise basic skills that we teachers rely on them knowing and applying. It will help children with Maths and Reading. Skoolbo learns the child’s abilities and tailors the games to their needs. KIDS LOVE IT… They feel like they are playing a game but they are learning!
24
Skoolbo Your children’s username and passwords are in the front of their reading diaries. Search for Skoolbo on the website Scroll down to find the post with information about how to install on your tablet or computer. It will also have login details.
25
Challenges Every half term, your child is expected to complete one reading and one maths challenge. Select Year 2 Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum challenges
26
Keep you child E-Safe If your child has access to the internet, they have access to lots of inappropriate materials. DON’T BE AFRAID, FOLLOW THESE STEPS TO BE E-SAFE! INFO on the website too.
27
Your internet settings
Parents can restrict their child’s internet access and block inappropriate materials. Try contacting your internet provider and they will be able to walk you through how to do this. Sometimes they can do it remotely and you won’t need to do a thing. Regularly check the internet history. If someone is deleting the internet history, then they are probably hiding something.
28
Social Media There are so many way for children to communicate these days. Most social media site have a age restriction, usually 13 years old. If your child has an account, they have lied about their age! IF you let your child have an account, make them agree for you to have access and always check the privacy settings each month.
29
Talk to them and be honest
The best way to deal with this is to be honest. Talk to them about your worries. Make them aware of the risks. Most importantly, tell them that if they are ever worried about anything they see or hear, tell someone!
30
Questions…. Thank you all for attending.
If you need anything please do not hesitate to come and see us. Does anyone have any questions?
