1 Visualizing: Visualizing is seeing the text in your mind sort of like a movie in your brain. This is not visualizing: I can really picture how Squeaky wants to win the race. She has worked hard and Gretchen and her friends are mean. This is: I can really picture the girls at May Day dancing in their pretty dresses and new shoes, and wearing their spring hats.

2 Predicting or Inferring?
Predicting = Making a guess about what will happen later in the text. Example: I think that Gretchen will beat Squeaky in the race because Squeaky is overconfident. Inferring = Using what I know (in my brain) and the clues in the text to find the answer. Example: Because I know that people with disabilities are needy, and Squeaky says she has to watch Raymond instead of doing chores, I can infer that she does not have a lot of time to just have fun and play with friends.

3 Clarifying or Monitoring?
Clarifying: Looking at a specific part of the text and finding out what it means. Example: What does this word/concept mean? Monitoring: Knowing when understanding of the text has stopped. Example: I am daydreaming and don’t know what that last section said. I need to reread. Example: What? This section is confusing. I need to slow down when I reread it and see if it is any clearer.

4 Asking Questions Asking questions to yourself as you read about the text.
