ELECTRICITY 1. ELECTRONS THAT ARE IN THE OUTER-
MOST ENERGY LEVELS OF ATOMS ARE NOT HELD TIGHTLY. THEY CAN JUMP FROM ONE ATOM TO ANOTHER. THESE MOVING ELECTRONS ARE ELECTRICITY!!!!!!!!

2. CIRCUIT- A pathway for electricity.
2a. CLOSED CIRCUIT – A complete pathway (loop) with no gaps allowing electricity to flow. 2b. OPENCIRCUIT – An incomplete pathway (loop) that does NOT allow electricity to flow.

3. SERIES CIRCUIT - THE CURRENT HAS ONLY
ONE PATH IT CAN TRAVEL.

-A CONDUCTOR IS MATERIAL THAT
ALLOWS ELECTRONS TO MOVE EASILY THROUGH IT. EXAMPLES . . . -AN INSULATOR IS A MATERIAL THAT DOESN’T ALLOW ELECTRONS TO MOVE THROUGH IT EASILY. EX. .

5. ELECTRICITY FLOWS FROM AN AREA
OF HIGHER POTENTIAL ENERGY TO AN AREA OF LOWER POTENTIAL ENERGY. 6. THE DIFFERENCE IN POTENTIAL BETWEEN TWO DIFFERENT PLACES IS CALLED POTENTIAL DIFFERENCE. IT IS MEASURED IN VOLTS.

7. CURRENT - THE FLOW OF ELECTRONS
THROUGH A CONDUCTOR FROM HIGH TO LOW POTENTIAL ENERGY. MEASURED IN AMPS. 8. RESISTANCE- OPPOSITION (against) TO THE FLOW OF ELECTRICITY. MEASURED IN OHMS.

-RESISTORS CAN BE USED TO CONTROL THE
FLOW OF ELECTRONS. TOASTERS & HAIR DRYERS USE RESISTANCE TO HEAT UP WIRES.

current and resistance. The formula for Ohm’s Law is resistance = voltage / current -What is the relationship between resistance and current?

STATIC ELECTRICITY is the
gathering of electric charges on an object. 11. An electric force exists between objects that have an electric charge.

-THE ELECTRIC FORCE CAN BE ATTRACTIVE OR
REPULSIVE. OPPOSITELY CHARGED OBJECTS ATTRACT WHILE OBJECTS WITH LIKE CHARGES REPEL.

-Coulomb’s Law explains electric force. The law can be
broken into two parts: a.The larger the charge of the objects, the bigger the electric force between them. b. The the distance between the two objects increases, the smaller the electric force between them.

12. Charge can be built up in one location by three
different methods: a. Friction – Charging by rubbing two surfaces together. b. Induction – Charging without touching -Like a shock from a tv that you haven’t even touched.

c. Conduction – charging by touching.
