3 Basic Trend of Accident Statistics

4 FAA Accident Data: Flights vs Flight Hours

5 Comparison of Transport Accident

6 EASA Data for AC less than 2250 Kg
Fatal accidents by aircraft category – accidents in EASA MS with aircraft below kg (2006 – 2011) Balloon 1 % Microlight 23 % Dirigible 1 % Aeroplane 41 % Gyroplane 2 % Helicopter 7 % Other 9 % Glider 18 %

7 EASA Overview: Accidents by AC

8 Phases of Flight

17 Amateur Built AC vs Certified AC

18 NTSB Findings:E-AB Aircraft
E-AB aircraft account for a disproportionate share of fatal accidents Powerplant failures and loss of control in flight are the most common Accident occurrences are similar for both new and used aircraft Structural failures have not been a common occurrence among E-AB aircraft. A high proportion of accidents occur early in the operational life of the aircraft. A large proportion of E-AB aircraft accidents occur shortly after being purchased 14 of the 224 study accidents during 2011 occurred during the first flight by a new owner of a used E-AB aircraft.

19 E-AB Aircraft Accidents

20 NTSB Executive Summary
Experimental Amateur-Built AC (E-AB Aircraft) represent: nearly 10 % of the U.S. GA-fleet These aircraft accounted in 2011 for: approximately 15 % of the total-GA accidents and 21 % of the fatal-U.S. GA accidents E-AB Aircraft represent a growing segment of the United States' general aviation fleet E-AB Aircraft in US : nearly 33,000 AC

21 Summary Accidents happen during every phase of flight with enroute flight and weather having the highest fatality ratios The accident/fatality ratios in aicraft involved in aerosports have slightly decreased or remained stable over the decade. E-AB AC have multiple risks but mechanical and inexperience with the AC are the highest risk factors. E-AB AC have more fatal accidents proportionaly
