2. Review on how to start Start with the opening paragraph.
Think about how the documents answer the DBQ.
Most likely your answers fall into one of a few categories: diseases, agriculture, technology, or language and religion. You will choose three categories to write about. These categories will become subtopic/”bucket” A, subtopic/”bucket” B, and subtopic/”bucket” C.

Remember, this is COMMON KNOWLEDGE, so you do not cite the background essay.

Last is your thesis statement (which is like your CLAIM that answers the main DBQ question)…
Your thesis statement focuses your ideas into one or two sentences.
Presents the topic of the DBQ and states your claim/position.
Your thesis statement should tell your reader what the paper is about and set the road map by introducing the categories that you plan to write about. Your thesis statement will answer the DBQ question and state A, B, and C.

EX: The culture in the Americas changed a result of the Columbian exchange which introduced new diseases, agricultural products, and religions to the New World.
EX: Diseases, agricultural products, and technologies brought to the New World through the Columbian exchange changed the culture of the Americas.

7. Next step, provide evidence
After you have written your introduction you will write one paragraph for each subtopic. This would be A, B, and C. (Roman numerals 2, 3, and 4 in your notes)
Each paragraph should:
State the claim
Support the claim with text evidence
How did the evidence you provided impact the culture?

8. How to cite… Option 1: According to document 1,….
Option 2: “we have got wonderful hold on their affections” ( doc 1)
Option 3 paraphrase: Columbus gave gifts to the natives to win their affections ( doc 1).

The Arrival of Europeans
The arrival of Christopher Columbus in the Caribbean in 1492 had a tremendous impact on the future of that region. The passage below describes that arrival. It is taken from an abridgement of Columbus’ personal journal made by Bartholome de las Casas.
“In order to win the friendship and affection of that people, and because I was convinced that their conversion to our Holy Faith would be better promoted through love than through force, I presented some of them with red caps and some strings of glass beads which they placed around their necks, and with other trifles of the insignificant worth that delighted them and by which we have got wonderful hold on their affections.”

Above are two excerpts from a diary or journal. Who is being quoted in both entries?
According to the first quote what were the Europeans planning for the natives? How did he intend to accomplish his goal?
How did the Europeans describe the natives? Why do you believe this was important information for the Europeans?

10. Conclusion Paragraph Re-state your thesis
Re-state your major points (A,B,C)
Add any strong closing points (think about an attorney making a closing argument)
Your conclusion is typically shorter than your other paragraphs.
