5 Uses of vital statistics – to strengthen Pop. and Social Stat data
Birth registration Total Fertility Rate, parity, total births, teenage child bearing Immunisable population (below 1 year, below 5 years) Death registration Mortality, adult and childhood mortality, cause of death, leading causes of death (immediate and underlying) Foetal mortality – linked to pregnancy monitoring – MCH indicators Maternal mortality rates Life expectancy Indicators on birth and death, can be analysed by other socio economic variables – region/District, place of occurrence, tribe, age, etc 8/23/2018 High level National Data Forum 14th -17th November 2017

6 Uses of vital statistics – to strengthen Pop. and Social Stat data
Marriages and divorces Statistics on marriage and divorces are important – analysis of the level of family formation, as a behavioural determinant in socio economic surveys, Legal perspective – certificates of marriages and divorces have implications for inheritance, child maintenance, etc Marriage, age at marriage, age at first marriage, early marriages, re- marriages, Divorce, Separation rates – analysis by other socio economic variables Statistics will help us get answers on the following; Is the marriage/divorce rate increasing or decreasing? Are the number of children from divorced couples increasing or decreasing? 8/23/2018 High level National Data Forum 14th -17th November 2017

Other uses Data can be linked with other existing programmes HMIS - health monitoring: growth monitoring, early detection of birth defects/disabilities among children Maternal and child health (for both mother and child) EMIS – linkage with indicators on school enrolment Programmes for Vulnerable persons. Linking the NIN to all Vital events and other sector databases 8/23/2018 High level National Data Forum 14th -17th November 2017

CONCLUSION We need joint collaboration with All CRVS key actors to have an effective CRVS system that will strengthen the population and Social statistics data at all planning levels. It is recommended that all these efforts are included in the ongoing review of the Sector Strategic Plan for Statistics 8/23/2018 High level National Data Forum 14th -17th November 2017
