2 Common Core Standards for First Graders
1. Ask and answer questions about key details in a text. 2. Retell stories, including key details, and demonstrate understanding of their central message or lesson. 3. Describe characters, settings, and major events in a story, using key details. 4. Identify words and phrases in stories or poems that suggest feelings or appeal to the senses. 5. Explain major differences between books that tell stories and books that give information, drawing on a wide reading of a range of text types. 6. Identify who is telling the story at various points in a text.

Characters Major vs. Minor Setting Point of View First Person Third Person Imagery

4 Characters Main Characters are the character that the story is mostly about. These are the character that change in the story. Minor Characters These characters do not change as often and are much smaller characters. The characters that the story is not really about.

5 Setting WHERE and WHEN the story takes place.

6 Point of View First Person Third Person
The narrator is a character in the story who can reveal only personal thoughts and feelings and what he or she sees and is told by other characters. He can’t tell us thoughts of other characters. Third Person Story is told by someone who is not in the story

7 Imagery Language that appeals to the senses
