2 10th GEOSS Asia Pacific Symposium

3 10th GEOSS Asia Pacific Symposium
10 th GEOSS Asia Pacific (AP) symposium was held at Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST) in Hanoi, Vietnam, from 18 – 20 September participants. Symposium theme : “Accelerating the realization of the SDGs with Earth Observations: Lessons from the Asia-Oceania Region” Day 1 : Welcome remarks, keynote speech, country reports, “Needs introduction from Vietnam”, and two special sessions. Day 2 : Five concurrent Working Groups (WG) sessions WG1:Asian Water Cycle Initiative (AWCI) WG2:Asia-Pacific Biodiversity Observation Network(AP-BON) WG3:GEO Carbon and GHG Initiatives WG4:Ocean Observation and Society(Blue Planet) WG5:Agriculture and Food Security to respond to the GEO Global Agricultural Monitoring Initiative (GEOGLAM) Day 3 : WG reports, AOGEOSS actions, panel discussions, and adaptation of Hanoi Statement The Participants agreed to the following outcomes and resolved to take the following actions toward the next Symposium in 2018 in Japan.

Request for further Vietnamese contribution to international EO collaboration

6 Update on the AP Activities (1) TanSat (China)
China successfully launched TanSat CO2 observing satellite in December 2016. TanSat Level 1B products will be available TODAY! As the operations of GOSAT and OCO-2 exceed their design lifetimes, TanSat is very important for long-term data continuity of satellite CO2 observation.

7 Update on the AP Activities (2) TCCON Philippines
★Burgos Philippines ★Manila A new TCCON (Total Carbon Column Observing Network) site, a first one in Southeast Asia, was established at Burgos, Philippines, with MOEJ funding support in December The operational observation started in April 2017. This site will fill gaps of validation data in tropical regions for GHG satellites such as GOSAT, OCO-2, TanSat, and Sentinel-5p.

8 Update on the AP Activities (3) AsiaFlux (1)
AsiaFlux: A regional network in FLUXNET ( Locations of AsiaFlux sites Number of sites registered: 107 (+4 in ) Joint Conference of AsiaFlux Workshop 2017 and the 15th Anniversary Celebration of ChinaFLUX, China (Aug 2017) Mini-Worlshop, Taiwan (Mar. 2016)

9 Update on the AP Activities (3) AsiaFlux (2)
GPP Model Validation Using Asiaflux data GPP Changes in AP Region During 2000 – 2015 by Model Locations of AsiaFlux sites (Ichii et al. JGR, 2017)

10 Update on the AP Activities (4) SEA LCLUC / Emission Mtg (Thailand)
LCLUC SARI International Regional Science Meeting in South/Southeast Asia (2017) Regional meetings to discuss various issues related to emission, air pollution, land use and land cover change in Southeastern Asia. 2017 meeting was held in Chiang Mai, Thailand in July Participants from 13 countries. US-funded training courses were also held. 2018 meeting will be held in Philippines in May 2018.

11 Update on the AP Activities (5) Satellite/Emission Inventory Mtg(Japan)
This meeting was held in Tokyo, Japan, in February One of its objectives was to discuss how to use satellite GHG data for verification of national GHG emission inventories. Remote sensing experts from Japan, US, and Europe, and inventory specialists from Japan, Indonesia, and Thailand, participated this meeting. The next meeting will be held in January/February 2018.
