RESEARCH ACTIVITIES Case studies. Survey monkey. Evaluation.
This gives me more insight into my target audience and but also a weakness is that some of the results may not be as reliable because it sometimes depends on who you give it out to for example if more females then male answers it could make the results inaccurate. Case studies. I could do a couple case studies on the production crews of music videos I have a particular interest in or that are similar to the genre of the song I am doing. This would be good because doing case studies are helpful as I can see what was successful for another artist for example doing a case study on Vance Joy would be helpful because he is categorised as Indie Folk and I could see what the inspiration behind some of his music videos are etc. and how it could aid me in my own music video. Survey monkey. This is to gather primary research on music videos and how I can critically use the data gathered to aid me in the creation of my music video. Evaluation. I will evaluate my work as I go along and this will aid me in critically looking back at my work and seeing what I could improve and how I could possibly make up for somethings for example my target audience. Research narrative. Identify how the narrative can relate to the lyrics of the song. Furthermore I could use both primary research and secondary to support my hypothesis. RESEARCH ACTIVITIES Interviews. Interviews are effective because I would be able to gather proper answers on the subject and be able to gather more detail then in a questionnaire. Investigate research methods. This will provide support and help in making my research more efficient.

SURVEY RESULTS After analysing the results from my survey about music videos these were my findings. Although the line graph shows that no one’s favourite genre is particularly folk. The results show that the majority like a bit of everything which could also mean that even though my song is classified as folk If I made the music video interesting then this could make up for the genre. This is very helpful because it shows that everyone that answered the survey likes listening to music as there wasn’t a single ‘no’.

This tells me that it would be useful to put the finished music video on YouTube because it is where its most likely to get the most recognition and additionally its where everyone watches music videos. This could be because of the format and easy access. This question would really aid me in my research because it links to my hypothesis questioning if narrative contributes to the success of a music video. The results show that the majority’s favourite aspect is style with theme and narrative following. Although narrative came second by only a small percentage it still means that I would need to be creative with my music video to make the narrative as entertaining as possible.

TARGET AUDIENCE RESEARCH
Predominately people who listen to music are females aged ("Yougov Profiles LITE"). This supports my primary research because my survey results show the same pattern with gender and age. Additionally YouGov shows the main platform that the target audience listen to music on is YouTube which is good because it shows again that for my music video to have a better chance of success I should upload it to YouTube. Using both my primary and secondary target audience research I believe my decision to make the target audience was accurate. Although it is a broad age gap it reflects the target audience demographic which showed that was the age gap that is the most involved in music. Even though the audience most interested in folk music would be slightly older, by making the music video interesting and using my research I could create a music video that attracts the target audience. Furthermore the folk song I am turning into a music video is a slow song it does rival those of a few others that have made it into the charts. For example Vance Joy’s Riptide. Vance Joy is categorised as Indie folk and has become increasingly popular since 2013 within my targeted audience. ("Vance Joy")

CASE STUDY: VANCE JOY Vance Joy surfaced when he signed a deal with Atlantic Records in This was a five album deal. ("Vance Joy") The Making Of Riptide: The music video was directed by Dimitri Basil and co-directed by Laura Gorun. ("Video Chats: Vance Joy On "Riptide" Directed By Dimitri Basil") Laura Gorun additionally appeared in the video. Dimitri Basil has additionally worked on many other songs including one song from The Kings Of Leon. IMVD have described the two directors style as a ‘washed out style’ with ‘carefully composed’ shots, praising the work on the video. ("Video Chats: Vance Joy On "Riptide" Directed By Dimitri Basil") Inspiration behind ‘Riptide’: Vance Joy has said that song was inspired by ‘three major experiences’ and described the music video as ‘a lot of puzzle pieces that just went together’. This shows that the music video although inspired was quite abstract and didn’t have a clear narrative. The song itself is named after a motel called ‘Riptide’ and it was a place him and his family stayed on holidays. That was on of the three major experiences that inspired the music video, as well as meeting a girl who was a magicians assistant. What's interesting in the video is that even though it is abstract the visuals still relate to the lyrics and the meaning behind it. ("The Truth About Vance Joy's Song Riptide") I did a case study on Vance Joy’s ‘Riptide’ because its similar in genre to the song I will be creating a music video about. Additionally the song I have been given references the sea as this song does. By using this song and Vance Joy in general as a case study I can identify what went in to the success of the music video and how I can use this in my music video for example the way the music video for ‘Riptide’ is constantly linking back to the lyrics is quite important because it also relates to my hypothesis that narrative within a music video is a key factor to success.
