1 Learning & Performance
The Relationship Between Learning & Performance

2 Lesson Objectives WE ARE LEARNING TO...
Identify and understand the different types of learning curves Understand the causes and solutions of why learning plateaus occur Understand the term learning plateau

3 Recapping on Previous Knowledge
Watch the following video Name the type of Feedback and state how they have linked this to a practical situation ( 4 marks)

4 The Relationship Between Learning & Performance
In order for us to know if learning has taken place we need to look at performance and the effect that learning has on it The majority of performance curves show levels of success over time and can give an impression of progress Performance Time

5 Types Of Performance Curve
Linear Performance Curve The learner keeps getting better with time. The relationship is directly proportional. This cannot go on indefinitely as at some stage the learner becomes perfect or reaches their limit Performance Time Negative Performance Curve The learner started well and improves rapidly, but the gains decrease over time . Improvements gradually slow down or can stop all together Performance Time

6 Types Of Performance Curve
Positive Performance Curve Learner progresses quite slowly at the beginning and then experiences a rapid increase in learning over time Performance Time S-shaped / Ogive A combination of increasing & decreasing gain. Learners frequently experience periods of progression, and then times when they make no improvements, then rapid improvements. The place where performance improvement stops is known as performance plateau Performance Time

7 Performance Plateau A Learning/Performance plateau occurs when the learner stops progressing and no improvement in skill is evident. Brainstorm why you think this may occur Using your text books and your own knowledge, highlight The reasons a plateau may occur How you can overcome a plateau Performance Time 7

8 Performance Plateau A Learning/Performance plateau occurs when the learner stops progressing and no improvement in skill is evident. Brainstorm why you think this may occur Goals are set too high or too low Fatigue , Lack of physical preparation Boredom , Lack of variety on practice Lack of motivation Lack of understanding of plateaus Low level of aspiration Lack of ability to adapt to new skills Poor coaching or teaching Performance Time 8

9 Performance Plateau There are a wide range of strategies that may help a learner overcome their performance plateau Break the practice into short sections to avoid boredom and fatigue Re – write goals with performer Offer rewards / encouragement to enhance motivation Allow time for mental rehearsal Make practices interesting & enjoyable Use the correct type/level of feedback Ensure the performer is physically ready for the next step Performance Time

10 Exam Questions Performers vary in the rate at which their performance progresses. Name the part of the curve labelled ‘A’ (1 mark) What may have caused this? (3 marks) What steps would you take as a coach to either prevent this stage occurring or help the performer to overcome it? (3 marks)

11 Conclusion Do you.... Understand the term learning plateau
Understand the causes and solutions of why learning plateaus occur Identify and understand the different types of learning curves
