3. No mental arithmetic paper 110 marks available for Maths
Timetable:
Monday 8th May - English Reading Test
Tuesday 9th May – English grammar, punctuation and spelling
Wednesday 10th May – Mathematics Paper 1 – arithmetic
- Mathematics Paper 2 – reasoning
Thursday 11th May – Mathematics Paper 3 – reasoning
All tests will start promptly once the children are settled at 9:15am.

4. We feel that children would benefit from bring in smaller groups.
Arrangements
For the majority of children, tests will take place in their classrooms except if:

We feel that the children would benefit from the opportunity to have breaks during the tests.
The children are entitled to extra time
The children would benefit from the help of a translator.
Other circumstances linked to special educational or health needs.
All children take all tests unless they are working well below the expected level at the time of the tests. In such circumstances, the children will be dis-applied. You will be informed if this is the case.

5. There is no cost for the this facility.
Breakfast Club
Year 6 breakfast club will be open to all pupils in year 6 on Monday 8th through to Thursday 11th May.
There is no cost for the this facility.
Breakfast club will be in the small hall – children to enter the building through the main entrance.
Starts at 8:00am
Is not compulsory.
You may feel that you would like your child to have the same start to the day as they normally would – that is fine. The option of breakfast club is there if you feel that they would benefit from it.

6. How are the tests administered?
Exam conditions
The tables will be separated
Children will be allowed certain equipment only – all of which we will provide.
The exams must take place in silence.
In the Maths exams and Grammar and Punctuation exam, the children may request questions to be read to them. If that is the case, the adult may only read the words that are on the paper and they are not permitted to explain the meaning of words / phrases etc.
The school may be subject to an exams inspection.
If this is the case, external verifiers will check through documentation and perhaps monitor how the tests are administered. There is nothing for your children to worry about if this is the case but it is important that they keep to the guidelines!

7. Children have a reading pamphlet and question booklet.
English Reading Paper
1 hour
Children have a reading pamphlet and question booklet.
The test is organised so that the children read a text, answer a range of questions about it, and then move on to the next text.
50 marks
Most probably fiction based
Range of reading skills tested e.g. literal understanding, inference and deduction, and comments on the author’s use of language and structure.
1 mark, 2 mark and 3 mark questions
Some multiple choice style questions.

Time is often an issue.
Reading stamina is a really important skill
Skimming and scanning
Explanation of points through the use of evidence from the texts to justify their opinions.

8. English Punctuation, Grammar and Spelling
2 Papers
Paper 1: Punctuation and Grammar
50 marks available. Mostly short answers, some multiple choice, some adding in of punctuation marks etc.
Do children know their word classes?
Can they punctuate accurately using the full range?
Can they spot / change sentences to ensure they are grammatically accurate?
Paper 2: Spelling
20 words dictated.
Children should know spelling rules and conventions.

9. Mathematics
3 papers.
Paper 1 – Arithmetic – 36 questions, 40 marks
30 minutes
Papers 2 and 3 – Reasoning – 40 minutes each, 35 marks each.
Children expected to explain some answers
Some marks available for working outs.

10. Writing is teacher assessed only. Submission date has been delayed.
Assessment is based on the children’s range of writing in their English book and their topic book.
Much higher demands of children
Writing exemplars have caused controversy!
The expected level was meant to be an old ‘4b’. It is more like an old ‘5c’.

11. Basic numeracy is key so times tables and command of the 4 operations.
It can be a stressful time for children. Keep to normal routines – they are working hard at school!

12. How will the results be reported?
Children will be working towards, working at or working beyond Age Related Expectation.
The pass mark for the tests will not be decided until after the tests have been taken.
Children will receive a raw score and a standardised score.
Secondary schools will receive the results
Schools will be measured on attainment and progress.
