5 THE GIVER Play

6 Before the Ceremony of 12 Jonas is feeling apprehensive about the upcoming ceremony. There is a sharing of feelings with his family tonight. What will you say?

7 Father starts the sharing of feelings. You decided to share last
Father starts the sharing of feelings. You decided to share last. How do you start? “I’m feeling apprehensive. It’s nothing really to worry about. It’s about the Ceremony.” “I’m feeling apprehensive. The fact that time flies worries me. It’s almost December.”

8 “I’m glad you told us of your feelings,” said Father
“I’m glad you told us of your feelings,” said Father. “Father and I will talk to you in private.” You agree and Lily goes away. Father shared his experience when he was younger and soon to go to the Ceremony of Twelve. Mother explains how the Elders are careful to choose what is good for each person. Now, you feel reassured by the talk. However, you haven’t the slightest idea what assignment the Elders have selected for you.

9 the Ceremony of 12 Jonas is feeling very nervous. You and your age group are sitting in numerical order. You are number nineteen. The Ceremony is about to start. What are your thoughts?

10 Asher has just been called up
Asher has just been called up. He has been given the Assignment of Assistant Director of Recreation. What do you think? You cheer loudly, ending up earning chastisement from your director for politeness. “Good job, Asher!” you think to yourself. You applaud with everyone else.

11 “I know you’re happy for your friend but you must remember to be polite and keep your voice at an acceptable level.” Number Eighteen is called. How are you feeling? I feel very nervous. I smooth my hair out as Fiona, number Eighteen, walks off the stage. I’m keeping my calm. I smooth my hair out as Fiona, number Eighteen, walks off the stage.

12 Number Eighteen is called. How are you feeling?
I feel very nervous. I smooth my hair out as Fiona, number Eighteen, walks off the stage. I’m keeping my calm. I smooth my hair out as Fiona, number Eighteen, walks off the stage.

13 You’re skipped. After Eighteen sat down, number twenty was called
You’re skipped! After Eighteen sat down, number twenty was called. Whispers can be heard everywhere. What’s your reaction? “What? What did I do wrong?” you think to yourself. Your hands begin to feel clammy. Applauding for others has now become a robotic motion. “What have I done wrong?” you think to yourself. You now no longer pay attention to other people receiving their assignments.

14 the Chief Elder apologizes to everyone for making them anxious
the Chief Elder apologizes to everyone for making them anxious. She explains that Jonas (you) had been selected to be the next receiver of memory. Everyone gasps, eyes widened in awe. You feel proud, yet nervous at the same time. You don’t feel brave at all, even if it was listed as a quality of a Receiver. Then, there’s this one quality: the Capacity to See Beyond. What is that? You feel proud but afraid. “I have to be alone and apart?” you think to yourself. Then, there’s this one quality of a Receiver I do not understand: the Capacity to See beyond.

15 The chief elder, along with everyone, looks at you
The chief elder, along with everyone, looks at you. Everything is silent. You want to say no. you look into the crowd. For a flickering second, they changed. “I’ll do it. I believe that I have the Capacity to See Beyond. I sometimes see something. Maybe it’s beyond.” “I think it’s true. I don’t understand it yet. I don’t know what it is. But sometimes I see something. And maybe it’s beyond.”

16 “Jonas, you will be trained to be our next receiver of memory
“Jonas, you will be trained to be our next receiver of memory. We thank you for your childhood,” said the chief elder. The whispers began. “Jonas. Jonas. Jonas.” Then louder, faster. “JONAS. JONAS. JONAS.” You know now that the community is accepting you and your new role. Your heart wells with gratitude and pride. However, you are filled with fear. You don’t know what you are to become. Or what would become of YOU.

17 The Annex: First Memories
You arrive at the destination you were assigned to go to. You meet an elderly man. You’re surprised to learn that there is a whole world out there from back and back and back. You start to receive your first memory.

18 You feel the hands of the receiver on your back grow cold
You feel the hands of the receiver on your back grow cold. The air begins to feel cold and you’re filled with energy. You begin to feel a new sensation of something Featherlike. “Snow!” you perceive. It is those bright, whirling torrent of crystals in the air around you. “Snow!” you perceive. It’s the tiny, soft, featherlike feelings peppering your body and face. You stick your tongue out.

19 You’re sitting slightly above the ground on a hard flat surface poised at the top of a long, extended mound that rose from land. “Sled. I’m sitting on a thing called sled. This mound is called a hill.” “This thing I’m sitting on is called a sled. This piece of land I’m poised on is called a hill.”

20 The sled begins to move. You understand everything instantly
The sled begins to move. You understand everything instantly. Your sled is propelled by runners. The snow builds on the runners and the ride begins to slow. You open your eyes. “I’m surprised. You don’t have the memory of it — of that ride on the sled — anymore? I took it from you! Did my parents have sleds when they were young? Did you?” “You don’t have the memory of it — of that ride on the sled — anymore? I took it from you! What happened to snow and the rest of it?”

21 “Wow. What happened to those things?”
“No. It's a very distant memory. That’s why is was so exhausting — I had to tug it forward from many generations back. It was given to me when I was a new Receiver.” “Wow. What happened to those things?” “That must be really tiring. What happened to those things?”

22 “I wish we had those things, still. Just now and then.”
“Climate Control. Snow limited the agricultural periods. Hills made conveyance of goods unwieldy. So, sameness,” the old man concluded. “I wish we had those things, still. Just now and then.” You sigh. “It’d be nice to have those things.”

23 “now, you should be able to perceive the name without being told
“now, you should be able to perceive the name without being told. I want to test the receiving.” You lay down and the man puts his hands on your back. You feel warmth spreading through your body. You lick your lips, the air was hot and heavy. Sunshine you perceive. You feel warmth spreading through your body. You stay still. This warmth came from far above. Sunshine you perceive.

24 At the end of training, you ask him what you should call him now that you’re the receiver.
“Call me The Giver,” he told Jonas.

25 Learning the Colors Jonas has recently been seeing something change in the quality of an apple and Fiona’s hair. The Giver explains the colors to you by bringing you back to your first memory with the sled.

26 “Don’t you have to give me the memory? How can I call it back?”
You try to explain what you saw in the apple and Fiona’s hair. “When I gave you the memory yesterday, the first one, the ride on the sled, did you look around? The sled?” “Don’t you have to give me the memory? How can I call it back?” “Don’t you have to give me the memory? How will I get it?”

27 “It is the same like remembering last year, or the year that you were a Seven, or a five. Just concentrate.” You close your eyes and go deep into your mind. There it is. You grin and move your legs to look underneath it. You stare at it. You close your eyes and sought the memory in your consciousness. There they were. You move your legs and look at the sled. You stare at it.

28 “I saw it, in the sled,” you said slowly
“I saw it, in the sled,” you said slowly. “You’re beginning to see the color red,” The Giver said. “Once, back in the time of memories, everything had a shape and size, like they are still, but they also had a quality called color. There were lots of colors and one of them is red. That’s the one you’re starting to see.” You question why colors had disappeared. The Giver explains that we relinquished sunshine, color, and did away differences to gain control of other things. The Giver then gives you the memory of a rainbow.

29 Learning Pain Jonas finally convinces The Giver to show him what pain is like. You revisit your first memory: riding down the hill on a sled.

30 You want to know the pain that the receiver is meant to experience
You want to know the pain that the receiver is meant to experience. You try to convince the giver to show it. “The Chief Elder told me, at the beginning, that the receiving of memory causes terrible pain. But I haven’t suffered, Giver.” “What is it that makes you suffer so much? If you gave some of it to me, maybe your pain would be less."

31 “All right. I’ve decided. We’ll start with something familiar
“All right. I’ve decided. We’ll start with something familiar. Let’s go once again to a hill, and a sled.” The Giver places his hands on your back.

32 You are again at the top of a hill on a sled. It begins to move forward. This time, the runner couldn’t slide through the frozen expanse. The sled gathered speed and skittered sideways. You attempt to steer by pulling the rope, but the steepness and speed took control. You’re terrified. You are jarred loose from all the bumping and thrown violently into the air.

33 You perceive fire and feel the flames licking against your flesh.
You fall with your leg twisted under you, and can hear the crack of bone. Your face scrapes along the jagged edges of ice. You gasp at the pain. You perceive fire and feel the flames licking against your flesh.

34 You are jarred loose from all the bumping and thrown violently into the air.
You perceive fire and feel the flames licking against your flesh.

35 You Give Away a Memory Jonas has asked to have Gabriel sleep with him tonight. Gabriel sleeps soundly during the first part of the night. Then, he begins to cry. You touch his back and recall a memory. It begins to slip away…

36 The middle hours of the night approached and gabe’s restlessness has awaken you. You pat Gabriel’s back rhythmically. You begin to remember a sail that The Giver had given to you: a bright, breezy day on a clear turquoise lake. You begin to remember a kite that The Giver had given to you: it was flying in the wind with bright sunshine.

37 Oh no, you feel It slipping from your fingers.
You remove your hand from the crib as Gabe became quiet. You recall the memory. It is duller: the colors weren’t as vivid and the motions were slower. You pulled away what’s left of the memory with such force as Gabe became quiet. The memory is duller: the colors weren’t as vivid and the motions were slower.

38 Will you confess of this power to give away memories?
Yes No

39 Good job! Now, we can move on to visit more memories and learning more emotions.

40 Dead end! If you confess, who knows what would become of your training?

41 War, Family, love So many more memories were received! You learned the strong emotions of pain in war. You try to understand love…

42 That memory of war was horrifying
That memory of war was horrifying! The giver shares his favorite memory with you. It was a whole family and you felt warmth: love.

43 You enjoyed the feeling of love
You enjoyed the feeling of love. You asked your parents if they love you. “Precision of language, please!” said father. You are confused. What’s wrong with the word? You are confused. This isn’t amusing.

44 “Your father meant that you used a very generalized word
“Your father meant that you used a very generalized word. It is meaningless. You stare at them. It didn’t feel like that in the memory. Meaningless? It didn’t feel like that in the memory.

45 You lie and say, “Yes, thank you, I do.”
After several examples, mother asked, “Do you understand why it’s inappropriate to use a word like ‘love’?” You lie and say, “Yes, thank you, I do.” You tell the truth and say, “No, please explain it further.”

46 Nice one! You made your first lie to your parents. It was the only way.

47 That didn’t turn out well
That didn’t turn out well. There really isn’t any other simple way to prove ‘love’ a meaningless word other than the precision of language.

48 The truth behind ‘release’
Jonas’ father is chosen to release the lesser of the newborn twins. You wanted to see the release and The Giver showed you the recording of the release. Little did you know the horrors that lay behind shadows of secrets…

49 Jonas told the giver about the release his father performed
Jonas told the giver about the release his father performed. The giver tells you that you should watch it. You and The Giver watch this morning’s ‘release’. You keep commenting during the video about how Father will make the unchosen baby nice and comfy for the trip to Elsewhere. You see that you father injects a liquid into the top of the baby’s head with a syringe. He noticed that the baby twitched unnaturally. When the baby stopped moving, Jonas recognized the posture of a dead body.

50 ‘Release’ is basically Murder

51 Escape You can’t stay in this community anymore. Now that you know the truth, it’s time to run. A plan has been formed. However, you’ve discovered that tomorrow will be Gabriel’s release. Tonight is the night of your escape…with Gabriel.

52 You stole your father’s bicycle since it was the only one with the child seat to carry Gabriel. You had broken some pretty serious rules. You rode hard and steady. You circled the outlying communities and stopped to rest. You circled the outlying communities and stopped to rest in an isolated place.

53 You recall a cool memory. You recall a freezing memory.
It was best to be in the isolated place. It’s been a few days of endless biking. The planes are starting to come. The planes use heat-seeking devices. How do you and gabe hide? You recall a cool memory. You recall a freezing memory.

54 Good, we don’t want to be an irresponsible nincompoop.

55 That wasn’t a good choice. Are you trying to kill gabe with your skills?

56 You had a lot of close calls
You had a lot of close calls. Gabe often yells out plane when he sees an object in the sky. This time, it wasn’t a plane. They stopped coming. You recognize birds flying from a previous memory. The memories are starting to fade as you get farther from the communities. You jump into the nearest bushes and peek at the sky. There were birds. You felt happiness for no more Sameness.

57 You try to get through the pain of an empty stomach. So does Gabe.
Food is becoming Scarce. Never have you used the word starving. Now, you are starving. You try to get through the pain of an empty stomach. So does Gabe. You recall a memory about feasts and share it with Gabe so they can feel the pleasure of being full.

58 Are you Trying to torture yourself and gabe? You have too much despair.

59 Hope is on your side. Keep it moving!

60 The sled of hope You’ve encountered rain and snow now. The rain kept you wet and cold. The snow made it harder for you to walk, now that your ankle is twisted and the bike is useless. You’re carrying Gabe somewhere safe soon…

61 Your journey is not over yet. You’re almost at the top of that hill
Your journey is not over yet. You’re almost at the top of that hill. You can feel that special tingle that there’s something waiting for you. Your spirit is failing. You no longer care about yourself. Gabe must make it there. Your spirit suddenly becomes happy. You are filled with determination that you will make it there with Gabe.

62 Why are you despairing? You’re almost there!

63 Come on! You got this! Just a little more…

64 You dug through the snow at the top of the hill and found the sled
You dug through the snow at the top of the hill and found the sled. You slide down the hill with gabe to the other side. Salvation is just at the other end. You begin to lose consciousness as you try to keep yourself upright while holding Gabriel. Their future is so close, coming ever closer. They went downward, faster and faster. Suddenly, Jonas knew that they had arrived at their destination.

65 They were waiting for you and Gabriel, too
