6. Example Paragraph – How successful is it?
At the beginning of the text we see Scrooge is feeling pain and agony when watching his ex- fiancée, Belle with her new husband. The flashback makes it interesting for the reader as it helps us to understand more about Scrooge. In the middle of the text we see the positive image of a warm scene which was ‘full of comfort’, this is very different to the beginning of the scene which is really unhappy. At the end of the text we see Scrooge’s agony and pain again when he says ‘"Leave me! Take me back. Haunt me no longer!" The fact that the emotions are really negative at the beginning and the end of the text shows how much Scrooge gets upset by his past.

7. Example Paragraph – How successful is it?
Dickens creates tension and interest for the reader by shifting the time periods within the text. The use of a cyclical structure which starts with Scrooge’s begging of the ghost ‘"show me no more! Conduct me home. Why do you delight to torture me?“’ immediately creates a sense of shock in the reader. We can tell that Scrooge is tormented by what he is seeing through his short sentences and emotive demands and question. As this is at the beginning of the text, it sets the tone for the remainder of the narrative where we see Scrooge’s pain and agony when observing the life that his ex- fiancée, Belle had with her husband. The use of flashback between the beginning and the end of the text also creates interest for the reader as it helps us to understand more about Scrooge’s character development. When we see the positive image of the warm, scene which was ‘full of comfort’ we are immediately contrasting this with the ‘torture’ that Scrooge was feeling watching it. The juxtaposition of Scrooge’s feelings with the setting in the past creates interest as we get the idea that Scrooge has missed out on happiness due to his cold-heartedness and focus on money. Dickens further emphasises this idea at the end of the text when we again see Scrooge’s agony when he commands ‘"Leave me! Take me back. Haunt me no longer!" The echoing of the opening line from the start of the extract is evident as we can see an almost mirror of Scrooge’s request. Dickens cleverly repeats Scrooge’s pleas at the beginning and the end to show Scrooge’s desperation to stop the painful emotions that the Spirit is showing him.
