Quaestio: Does Alexander deserve to be called Great? Nunc Agenda: You have 3 minutes to prepare to debate “Who were the good guys in the Peloponnesian War, Athens or Sparta.” You may be placed on either side so be ready with both!

5 Alexander Conquers Macedonian Phalanx army conquered Asia Minor, Egypt, Babylon, Persia, and beyond… Founded cities all over, named them Alexandria Married Persian princess to develop good relations, encouraged his men to marry from conquered peoples In India, they encountered warriors on elephants Tired army returned to Babylon Alexander died of fever without naming a successor

10 Legacy of Hellenism Dying words were that his empire should go “to the strongest” Generals fought for control Empire divided among successors Seleucus (Middle East, Persia) Ptolemy (Egypt) Antigonus (Macedonia) Tried to be enlightened rulers Greek culture spread in East, blending with local culture CULTURAL DIFFUSION!!! Resulting culture = Hellenistic Example: Indo-Greek Buddhist Kingdom in Afghanistan!

Captain: Clarify directions, make sure all working together and on task, direct group Orator: Reads to the group/class Scribe: Makes sure all answers are written by all Timer: Keeps track of time, keeps group on task Examine the documents together, and as a group, discuss and answer the questions. Keep in mind the summary question!
