1 Paul Sermon Georgia Povey

2 He studied BA Fine Art under Professor Roy Ascott at the Newport School of Fine Art from 1985 to 1988 and completed his MFA degree at the University of Reading in 1991. Since the early nineteen-nineties Paul Sermon’s practice-based research in the field of contemporary media art has centred on the creative use of telecommunication technologies. “First and foremost I consider myself a creative practitioner and therefore my teaching is as much my creative practice as are my practice-based research projects.”

4 Company projects This collaborative partnership between Paul Sermon and Charlotte Gould resulted in an interactive ludic interface that was first developed for the BBC ‘Village Screen’ (public urban video screen) at the Glastonbury Festival in 2009. ‘Picnic on the Screen’ Following its success at the Glastonbury Festival 2009, Picnic on the Screen was invited to link public audiences between the Bluecoat Gallery Liverpool and the University of Shanghai, for the first time via a telematic videoconference connection, as part of Liverpool Biennial 2010.

5 Telematic vision Telematic dreaming
A live telematic video installation, linking two remote sites, via 3 x 64K ISDN telephone lines. In Telematic Dreaming the user exchanges their tactile senses and touch by replacing their hands with their eyes.

Telecommunication is the transmission of messages that are communicated over long distances Most of his projects have been supported by the creative use of telecommunication technologies

7 Location? From 1993 to 1999 Paul Sermon worked as Dozent for Media Art at the HGB Academy of Visual Arts in Leipzig, Germany. Awarded the prestigious Prix Ars Electronica Golden Nica award; in the category of interactive art for the hyper media installation Think about the People now, in Linz, Austria in 1991 During this time continued to produced further interactive telematic installations including Telamatic Encounter in 1996 and The Tables Turned in 1997 for the Ars Electronica Centre in Linz, and the ZKM Media Museum in Karlsruhe.

8 Audience The audience play directly to the camera and occupy this new public space by performing to themselves and others when screened later.- Telematic Dreaming

9 I strongly believe in teaching art and design through creative experiences and this practice-based research-informed teaching often directly involves my students in both the conceptual development and public exhibition of such projects.  The Future! Wanting to strive to teach at all levels, from first year undergraduate students to postgraduate taught masters and the supervision of PhD students.
