2 During the Middle Ages the Catholic Church had risen to power
During the Middle Ages the Catholic Church had risen to power. After the fall of Rome, many were uncertain where life would lead them and many tragic events led people to have a higher belief in God. This is where we start to see the rise of Christianity. As you recall, Jerusalem was a highly valued religious city! This was the origin for the Crusades!

the place where Jesus preached, crucified and ascended to heaven the place where Muhammad met three earlier prophets Abraham, Moses and Jesus. the site of the ancient temple built by Solomon.

4 The Crusades were a long series of wars between Christians & Muslims over Jerusalem.

9 The Crusades evolved into a series of wars which lasted over several centuries and took place in several different regions. During this time, many differing people & ideas came into contact with one another.

Christianity did spread outside of Europe Crusaders were unable to hold on to gained lands Weakened the power of the Pope and the Church

14 Feudalism Weakened Many nobles lost their fortunes & lives
Lack of nobility led to the rise of king’s authority Kings challenged the authority of the Church

15 Trade & Wealth Increased Led to expand trade=based European economy
Interactions with other lands (Italian Peninsula) led to develop trade cities/centers Led to expand trade=based European economy
