Religion day 18th January Today’s session: Gain an understanding of how religious dress is accepted by society Gain and understanding about how it influences the fashion industry We will also discuss controversial cases

2 Islam Islam requires both men and women to be modest not only in behaviour but in dress. Some Muslim women wear modest dress, or hijab, that covers most of the head and body Can you think of any cases where there have been controversial implications about Islamic religious dress?

3 Sikhs Sikhs—followers of Sikhism, a religion from India—also keep their heads covered. Sikh men wrap their heads in cotton turbans, while Sikh women may wear turbans or headscarves Salvar Kamees is Sikh women's wear. Salvar are a baggy loose fitting pant with an ankle cuff called a ponche. The salvar is worn beneath the kamees, a dress top

4 Jews Tzniut in Hebrew means Modesty. Orthodox Judaism requires men and women practice modesty of dress. This requirement is understood by all orthodox folk, however the standards vary as does the strictness and adherence.

5 Buddhists Buddhist nuns and monks wear robes in a variety of colours, from grey to orange, depending on their region and their tradition. In many cases, both nuns and monks in the Buddhist tradition shave their heads.

6 Religious Rights in the Workplace
In January 2013, the European Court of Human Rights (the Court) published its judgment in four combined cases about religious rights in the workplace. The cases are: Eweida and Chaplin v. the United Kingdom Ladele and McFarlane v. the United Kingdom. The cases were brought by Christians, but the implications of the judgment apply to employees with any religion or belief, or none. The judgment affects employer responsibilities for policies and practices affecting religion or belief rights in the workplace, the rights of employees (including job applicants) and the rights of customers or service users.

7 Religion and Fashion Religious dress has also inspired fashion and sometimes resulted in controversial outcomes. You have 5 minutes to list how you think people can be offended by using religion as a source of inspiration. Gaultier caused outrage with his collection inspired by Hasidic Jews.

8 Chanel Another famous example is the so-called (low-cut) ‘Quran dress’ (1994) designed by Karl Lagerfeld that was decorated with a fragment of the Quran. Why do you think this would offend Muslims? What do you think happened as a result? Karl Lagerfeld, expressed shock and said he thought the script came from a love-poem inspired by the Taj Mahal. As fears grew of a Satanic Verses style fatwa, Chanel boss Claude Eliette visited the Grand Mosque in Paris to make a personal apology to the religious leader of France's three million Muslims The text read: "He whom God guides is well guided, and he who is abandoned by God will find no one to put him on the right road."
