1 There are currently 6,200,000 people living in the UK who have served in the armed forces (the army, the navy or the airforce). 16,000,000 died in World War I. 35,000,000 poppies are made each year by the Royal British Legion. Poppies made in England have three petals but those made in Scotland have four petals. Men had to be 19 years old to join the army during World War I, but many boys lied about their age to sign up. The Royal British Legion was formed in That year the sale of poppies raised £106,000. The money was used to help men who had served in the First World War In the UK in World War I, 80,000 women joined the armed forces. In World War 2 this number increased to 800,000.
