1 High School Wednesday, January 13, 2010
Objective – Continue our look at Disco artists with Isaac Hayes and Sly and The Family Stone. Continue to build our skills with rhythmic dictations and listen to musical examples of the previously listed artists Bell Ringer Identify three different artists that we have covered in Disco and list two (2) different characteristics about each. Characteristic = something of importance (i.e. song or interesting fact) Movement Activity Discussion on Isaac Hayes and Sly and The Family Stone Rhythmic Dictation

2 Isaac Hayes Childhood Born into a poor family in 1942
Learned to sing at the age of 5 via church Dropped out of High School but then returned to earn his diploma at the age of 21 First professional gigs started in is early 20’s (late 1950’s) at a club in North Memphis, TN

3 Recording Career Started his recording career in the early 60’s with Stax Records Stax Records also had Otis Redding In 1967, Redding dies in a plane crash An instant rush to produce new albums came in late 1969 Hayes’ album, ‘Hot Buttered Soul’ was released and it achieved moderate success.

4 Isaac Hayes Throughout his recording career, Hayes continued to be an influence on disco music. His popular hits include ‘You’ve lost that loving feeling’ ‘The Look of Love’ ‘Never Can Say Goodbye’ – which featured the Jackson 5

5 Hayes on TV In addition to Hayes’ success in the music business, his influence has also been seen on TV He provided most of the music to the hit movie ‘Shaft’ He was also the voice for The Chef on ‘South Park’

6 Sly & The Family Stone Came out as a highly influential band in the late 1960’s Performed at the famed Woodstock Festival of 1969 Mainly organized by Sylvester Stewart (Sly Stone)

7 Sly & The Family Stone Had many popular hits of the late 1960’s and 1970’s ‘Dance to The Music’ ‘Stand!’ ‘Everyday People’ ‘Family Affair’

8 Sly & The Family Stone Continued to be a highly influential group for rock, psychedelic soul and r&b Groups influenced by Sly & The Family Stone include Michael Jakcson George Clinton and The Parliament – Funk Diana Ross and The Supremes and many more
