If you could visit any country from South Asia for vacation, which would you visit? Explain your choice.

5. South Asian Countries: Prediction Statements!
Based on your prior knowledge of South Asia and the mapping you worked on last class, how do you think you might describe the countries of South Asia?
Working as a table group, try to come up with 7 Prediction Statements for how you believe South Asia could be described…
Each statement should begin something like “South Asian countries are…” or “South Asian countries have…” or something similar.
Think about possible cultural characteristics, governments, standard of living, ethnic groups, economies, etc.

6. Exploring South Asian Countries!
Using your smart devices, and once again working with your table group members, try to find information that could be used to explain each of the following areas for each country…
World Factbook would be the best place to start and will most likely give you the best information to work with.

7. Exploring South Asian Countries
Each table group is going to receive one of the following countries:
Bhutan
Nepal
Bangladesh
India
Sri Lanka
Maldives
Pakistan

8. South Asian Travel Brochures!
Each table group is going to be creating a travel brochure for their respective country!
You travel brochure should have each of the following elements:
An attractive and inviting cover
Information about important geographical landmarks
Major religions and ethnic groups
Information that illustrates the standard of living
Resources or industries that drive the economy
System of government in place today
Illustrations!!
You have 35 mins to complete your brochure, make sure you divide your work evenly and pay attention to the clock!

9. Pick 2 – South Asian Style!
Choose 2 countries that are not the ones you and your table group members worked on…
Now write a descriptive paragraph explaining the major characteristics of the country you have chosen!
If you would like, you can even write your descriptive paragraph in the form of an infomercial!
However, you must make sure you paragraph describes each part of the major areas discussed in the brochure

10. Closure…3-2-1 questions
What are 3 things you learned about your country?
What are 2 things you thought were the most interesting?
What is 1 thing your would like to know more about your country?

12. Responding to 3-2-1 questions from yesterday…
You should respond to Closure Questions with thoughtful, high level answers
Saying you learned about a country’s flag isn’t a high level answer, unless you can explain what the colors/symbols mean
Additionally, stating things you should have learned from the map activities doesn’t count as a new piece of information
Lastly, you should always follow directions, I should not have to tell you that at this point of the year

18. Hinduism: The Bhagavad Gita
The Bhagavad Gita is an ancient Indian text that became an important work of Hindu tradition in terms of both literature and philosophy.
The name Bhagavad Gita translates to “the song of the Lord”
It is composed as a poem and it contains many key topics related to the Indian intellectual and spiritual tradition.
After reading the “Bhagavad Gita: Questions and Answers,” what can you tell are some of the major differences, as well as similarities, between this text and the monotheistic religious texts of the MENA?

Each person gets one religion, use the literature provided to become your group expert in the religion of you choice.

Subway Usage in Prominent Cities
Hamburg, Germany: about 3 passengers/square meter
New York, United States: 4 passengers/square meter
London, England: about 6 passengers/square meter
Paris, France: about 7 passengers/square meter
Tokyo, Japan: about 9 passengers/square meter
How do you believe this information could affect daily life in these cities?
What other areas of life could be affected by high population density in countries like Japan?

26. Population Density…
Some countries in South to East Asia have the highest population densities in the world.
Japan is one example of a highly densely populated area.
Japan, which is about half the size of California, has a population about half the size of the United States.
Additionally, the majority of the population is settled in about 16% of the country.

India
1.32 billion people / about 1.27 million square miles
The United States
323 million people/ about 3.6 million square miles
Australia
24 million people/ about 3 million square miles
Japan
127 million people/ about 146,000 square miles
Japan’s arable land: about 18,000 square miles
Jumps from about 860 ppl/square mile to 7,000 ppl/square mile!

What is the Demographic Transition Model and why do we use it?
What are the different stages of population growth that can be illustrated by population pyramids?
What types of countries fall into the categories from the previous question?

34. Population Pyramids: India and Pakistan
Review the information explained by the population pyramids for Pakistan and India…
On the back of the population pyramid, record and answer the following questions:
How are the population pyramids similar? How are they different?
Which stage of population growth do the countries appear to be in?
What do you think these two population pyramids imply about the region of South Asia?

35. Industrialization in India: Pros and Cons
Each person will receive a copy of the article “A Tale of New Cities: India’s push to Industrialize”
Create a 2-column chart, one column for “Pros” and one column for “Cons”
Take a couple minutes to read through the article, looking for reasons one might use to justify industrialization versus reasons one might use to condemn industrialization.
As you read, list as many reasons as you can to justify Industrialization in the “Pros” column, and in the “Cons” column list the reasons you can find to condemn industrialization
After you complete your personal chart, compare your answers with your shoulder partner.

36. People and the Environment: India
Each person will receive a Reading Essential and Study Guide Packet about the People and Environment of India.
Use a highlighter to point out the most important details about India’s environment.
After reading each section, answer the Progress Check Question
Lastly, come up with a question/answer that could be answered using the content of each section (3 sections, 3 questions). Record these questions on a separate sheet of loose leaf. (You will be turning in your questions at the end)
