Collegiate Charter High School of LA: Monday, November 9 at 11:30 AM on the UCLA Campus Santa Monica College Football Shadowing Saturday, Nov. 14 (Game starts at 1 PM) Social this Friday! UCLA vs USC Women's Soccer at 6 PM (Meet outside of Drake Stadium at 5:30 PM)

4 Graduate Programs in Sports Medicine

5 Medical School Step 1: Obtain a bachelor's degree (4 yrs)
Step 2: Obtain a medical degree (4 yrs) MD or DO Step 3: Complete a Residency Family practice, pediatrics, PM&R, or emergency medicine plus sports med fellowship (no surgery) Orthopedic surgery plus sports med fellowship to be a sports medicine doctor who does surgery

6 Medical School Admissions
Solid grades and MCAT score - VERY IMPORTANT Average GPA: , Average MCAT: A variety of clinical experience/patient care experience Shadowing, hospital volunteering, and clinical employment all look great A commitment to community service Volunteering within the LA community and participating in international service both look great!

7 Medical School Admissions
Research - Highly recommended, but not required Far more important at some schools than others Consider the Biomedical Research Minor Other "application boosters" that strengthen an application Leadership experience (officer positions) Work experience (medical or nonmedical) Interesting hobbies or passions Graduate degrees PUBLICATIONS!

8 Medical School Admissions - Timeline
Take the MCAT after pre-req’s (You cannot cram for this) English, Writing II’s, and upper division classes may help Apply in June of the year prior to entry (primary app) Secondary applications summer of the year prior to entry (beginning in July) Interviews and acceptances throughout the following year

9 Letters of Recommendation
2 Science letters and 1 non-science letter from professors that know you well This will cover the minimum requirements at most schools (the non-science letter is not needed at the vast majority of schools); check individual schools for specific requirements Get a letter from any research supervisor, volunteer coordinator, doctor, etc… that knows you well and can write a good letter Get these early (you can start now!) Ask for letters from professors when their class ends, not months/years later Professors of small classes can typically say a lot more about you!

10 Medical School Admissions - Some Tips
What/how you write is more important than what you did! Get many, many people to read your app UCLA has services that will help you Start working on personal statement and 15 activities early! Several months before application You may pick 3 “most meaningful” activities Submit letters of rec, transcripts, primary app, and secondary apps early! On the first day, if possible

11 Medical School Admissions - Some Tips
You can pre-write your secondary applications Old, concise class notes may be helpful for the MCAT Register for the MCAT the first day new exams become available! Applying to a large number of schools is a good idea, even if it is expensive!

12 Physical Therapy School
Typically 3 years plus a residency in Sports Medicine Similar tips as for medical schools admissions Start essays/application early Get letters of rec early Get a lot of feedback on your personal statement and essays Anatomy/physiology/psychology may be required (check individual schools)

13 PT Admissions A certain number of verified shadowing hours are REQUIRED, depending on the school Take the GRE prior to applying Submit PTCAS July prior to year of entry Some schools do interviews, some do not

14 Nursing School Admissions
If you are not enrolled in a Nursing Bachelor’s Degree Program: Can complete a Master’s Program after Bachelor’s UCLA offers the Masters Entry Clinical Nurse Program, which is 2 yrs Post-licensure programs: Master’s degree or post-master’s certificate, PhD Degree There is an Orthopedic Nursing Certification for advanced sports medicine training

15 Chiropractic School Each school has their own application
Postgraduate study in sports medicine is available Some schools interview, some do not Letters of recommendation are required

16 Also look into... Podiatry - treatment of the feet and their ailments
Nutrition (Next week!) Exercise physiology Sports scientist (Sports researchers who are not healthcare practitioners)
