Drill – Predict why some reactions do not occur.
2
Drill – 2/10/11 Determine the type of chemical reaction, write the products, and then balance: FeF3 + Cl2 CaO
3
Drill – 2/12/11 A compound with a formula mass of amu is found to be 85.64% carbon and 14.36% hydrogen by mass. Find its molecular formula.

Unit 8 Test – Tuesday, 2/15! Converting between mass, moles, and particles for compounds Percent Composition Empirical Formulas Chemical Reactions Balancing Chemical Equations Types of Reactions Activity Series
5
Activity Series
6
Activity The ability of an element to react.
The greater the ability, the greater the activity.
7
Activity Series A list of elements organized according by how reactive they are. The most active elements are placed at the top and can replace each of the elements below it from a compound in a single displacement reaction. An element cannot replace an element above it in the series.
8
Used for single displacement reactions
There are also special rules for how elements will react with water and oxygen. Make sure to read the text! Cannot be used for synthesis (except with oxygen), decomposition, double displacement or combustion!
9
The activity series helps us predict if chemical reactions will occur.
Ex: Aluminum and zinc chloride? Yes! 2Al + 3ZnCl2 3Zn + 2AlCl3 Ex: Cobalt and sodium chloride? No Reaction!
10
Say if the reaction will occur. If so, predict the products.
Zn (s) + H20 (l) Sn (s) + O2 (g) Cd (s) + Pb(NO3)2 (aq) Cu (s) + HCl (aq) 20°C
