2 Discussion on previous Lesson
1.According to the meaning of the sentences, narration is changed. 2. When we change Narration, we change its subject, object, verb, conjunction 3. There are some special sentences which are not changed according to general rules. For example-

3 D:S :Today at 11 am he said, “I shall go to Dhaka tomorrow.”
Today/Tomorrow D:S :Today at 11 am he said, “I shall go to Dhaka tomorrow.” I.S : Today at 11 am he said that he would go to Dhaka tomorrow This/That D.S: Afsana said, “I will present this watch to Robina.” I.S: Afsana said that she would present this watch to Robina.

4 Main/Subordinate Clause
Here/There D:S : Kabir said, “We live in Bangladesh. You can see the natural beauty here. I.S : Kabir said that they lived in Bangladesh. He added that he (listener) could see the natural beauty here. Main/Subordinate Clause D.S: Afsana said, “When we were in Dhaka we bought a flat. I.S: Afsana said that when they were in Dhaka they had bought a flat.

5 D.S: The lady said, “I took caviar and drank champagne.”
D.S: He said, “I gave him taka five as he was blind.” I.S: He said that he had given him taka five as he was blind. D.S: “I did not buy the house because it was east face house”, he said. I.S: He said that he had not bought the house because it was east face house. D.S: The lady said, “I took caviar and drank champagne.” I.S: The lady said that she took caviar and drank champagne.

6 Unreal Past/Past Conditional
D.S: Rana said, “If I were a minister I would make the bridge.” I.S: Rana said that if he were a minister he would make the bridge. Question Tag D.S : Kamal said to Zamal, “You didn’t do the work, did you?” I.S : Kamal asked Zamal if he had not done the work and assumed that he had not.

7 2. Passage Narration Zaman said to me "Have you finished reading the book I gave you yesterday?“ "Yes, I have finished reading the book" I replied. "What an interesting book it is! I wish I would borrow the book earlier" I said. "Will you return the book to me today?" he asked.

8 D: “You will help me to buy some books” Asif said
Extend clauses/ phrases : D: “You will help me to buy some books” Asif said to Nasif. Picking up him (N) at his (A) car. I: Picking up Nasif at his (A) car Asif told him (N) that he (N) would help him (A) to buy some books. Assertive sentences of Speaker D : Kabir said, “I have bought a cap.I will present it to Robi. Now I am going to him. I : Kabir said that he had bought a cap. He added that he would present it to Robi.He further added that he was going to him (R) then.

9 D : “I will pay for it", he said. "I broke it.
I brought the axe down careless.” I : He said that he would pay for it as he had broken it. He added that he had brought the axe down careless. D :The lady said, “I see that you’re in the habit of eating a heavy luncheon. I’m sure it’s a mistake. Why don’t you follow my example and just eat one thing?” I:The lady said that she saw that he was in thehabit of eating a heavy luncheon. She added that she was sure it was mistake. Then she asked (him) why he did not follow her example and just ate one thing.

10 Reported speech- Yes : D :“Do you know the prisoner at the bar?"said the judge. "Yes," said the postmaster. "I knew him in London." I: The judge asked the postmaster if he knew the prisoner at the bar. The postmaster replied that he did and said that he had knew him in London. D.S: “Can you draw the map of Bangladesh?” the teacher said. “Yes, I can” the student said. I.S: The teacher asked the student if he could draw the map of Bangladesh. The student replied that he could.

11 Reported speech- No : D : "Are you going to college?" said Kabir. "No," Rafiq said, "I am going to market." I : Karim asked Rafiq if he was going to college. Rafiq replied that he was not and said that he was going to market. Vocative case: D :The soldier said to the officer, "Lord, can I go out?" I : The soldier addressed the officer as lord and asked him if he (s) could go out.

12 Reported speech- But: D :Karim said to me, "But you have done well!" I : Karim was astonished and said that I had done well. D : "I will have to go to the market." Kabir said. "But you are very weak." said Karim. I: Kabir said that he had to go to the market. karim objected and said that he (K) was very weak. D: "I don't want anything but food." Jamil said. I : "Jamil said that he did not want anything but food.

13 Reporting Verb: Replied /Asked /Muttered /Reported /Inside /Shouted /Sighed/Stammered /Accused /Apologized /Denied /Offered Examples: D : Asif said to Kabir. "You are liable for this situation." I : Asif accused Kabir that he was liable for that situation. D : She said, "No, I have not seen it." I : She denied that she had seen it.

14 Reported Speech -?: D : "You've cut off your hair?" asked Jim. "Cut it off and sold it said Della. I : Being surprised, Jim asked Della if she had cut off her hair. Della replied that she had cut it off and sold it. Hello : D : Rafiq said, "Hello Rakib, where were you so long?" I : Rafiq greeted Rakib and asked him where he was so long.

15 Single Word- Nonsense…..
D :"Hello Salim, Wake up. It's 8 o'clock" Tipu said. I :Drawing Salim's attention Tipu told him to wake up. He added that it was 8 o'clock. Single Word- Nonsense….. D.S: “I suppose we are in danger.” said Mss Mevin. “Nonsense”, said Mrs Packletide, “It’s a very old tiger.” I.S: Mss Mevin said that she support in danger. Dismissing the idea of Mss Mevin Mrs Packletide said that it was a very old tiger.

16 Exercise: Direct Speech : The teacher said to Kamal "Why you talking
in the class? you should behave yourself." Kamal replied the teacher "Sir, I'm sorry, I'm asking Rahim to lend me his pen. My pen has run out." The teacher said, "Be attentive and listen to my lecture." The teacher asked Kamal why he was talking in the class. Then he (T) said that he (K) should behave himself. Kamal addressed the teacher as sir and replied that he was sorry. He (K) added that he was asking Rahim to lend him (R) pen as his pen had run out.The teacher advisedKamal to be attentive and listen to his (T) lecture.

17 Single Word- Nonsense…..
