1 Number of Interviews Completed: 30

2 Initial Idea We were working on using soft optics to make privacy- enabling windows and smart windows to mitigate sunlight transmission through car windows and enable passive cooling We intend to harness the kirigami sheets as tunable metamaterial that can preferentially permit certain frequencies of light to be transmitted, while precluding other spectral bands. Initial Target Customers: Car Owners To prevent the interior of cars from heating up during the summer when left in direct sunlight environment Nature materials (2015) Nature (2014)

3 Customers and StakeHolders
Car Owners It is generally not needed by those that have indoor parking Glare is also an issue for car owners Customers are willing to pay 5 to 20 dollars We believed that all car owners need this tech. But if owners have indoor parking, they don’t. This reduces our potential customer base. We realized that if we can control the transmission with our tech, we can apply the same tech for houses as well as cars. Buildings Privacy is a big issue in closely spaced apartments Leed certification is good for those that rent houses Homeowners - reluctant to change existing windows because they are not sure how long it would take them to have a positive turnover Property builders - interested, but their issue is how cheap the glass will be and how much money they will save on energy. As well as how much they can hike up rent due to being green. Students/Tenants - Can’t change existing windows, so they want something like a detachable film that can be used to put on glass.

4 Thoughts and Findings We thought: We found:
people would readily want to preclude heating up of their cars’ interior We found: Car owners with garages have no use for the technology to keep cars cool. But the same technology can be applied for windows in residences. But, Homeowners are not willing to change the existing glass

5 The New and Improved IDea
We moved on to the FILM or applique idea. We don’t have to replace windows, but put something on them. Using soft photonics as some form of periodic photonic crystals. If we change the shape, the spectral response changes. It can be tuned electrically/ mechanically. Our Initial customers were: homeowners, home rentals, realtors, car owners Initial value proposition: We are developing a detachable film using soft photonics that can tune its spectral response in order to control heat-transfer or visibility through it, making residences consume less power, preventing cars from heating up, and increasing privacy

6 Revised Trifold LumiVeris Sami Koutsares, Soham Saha, Justus Ndukaife
Value Proposition •Home owners •Reduce energy costs •Ensure privacy of the people living in houses •Ensure that the house always has an optimal level of light inside Customer Discovery House Owner •Are you concerned with the energy cost of your house? •Are you worried about privacy? •Is sun - glare a problem in the morning? Problem Statement: We are exploring auto adjustable window screening technologies Who might care: •Homeowners and tenants •Car owners •House and car maintenance workers Ecosystem and Value Chain Map Realty mgmt -> Building owner->Retail Distributor->Shipping -> Warehouse -> Manufacturing

7 Current Solutions Window tinting of cars (Permanent fix, once you set it, you can’t adjust it) Corning glass (Adjustable, You have to replace all of your glass) Switchable Privacy Glass (You pass a current to change the transparency. But this consumes power) Advantages Same technology can be used for both privacy and power control Existing market If it consumes little or no power, it saves energy.

8 What do we need to learn? Competing Technologies: Switchable Privacy Glass, Corning Dynamic Windows Regulatory Frameworks: LEEDS Certification, Environmental Protection Energy Other Questions: How does Corning Dynamic Windows work? How much does it cost? How do we manufacture our films?
