1 Atomic Structure Opener: How do you calculate atomic mass? SWBAT:
Name the subatomic particles in an atom Use atomic and mass numbers to distinguish atoms

2 Structure of the Nuclear Atom
Electrons: negatively charged subatomic particles, orbit the nucleus of the atom, very small (e-) Protons: positively charged subatomic particles, in the nucleus, much larger (p+) Neutrons: subatomic particles without a charge, in the nucleus, same size as protons (n0)

3 Structure of the Nuclear Atom
Atoms are mostly made of empty space Protons and neutrons are located in the nucleus, the heaviest part of the atom Electrons are distributed around the nucleus and occupy almost all of the volume of the atom

4 Atomic Number Elements are different because they contain different numbers of protons The atomic number of an element is the number of protons in the nucleus of an atom of that element The mass number of an atom/element is the total number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus # of neutrons = mass # – atomic #

5 Isotopes Isotopes of an element have different numbers of neutrons, but the same number of protons They have different mass numbers The mass number listed on the periodic table represents a weighted average mass of the atoms in a naturally occurring sample of the element Hydrogen-1 Hydrogen-2 Hydrogen-3 Proton Neutron
