Ever since Able received the blessing from God that Cain wanted, the desire for revenge has lead to more death than can be quantifiably estimated. It has been said that it is a dish best served cold, where the victim least expects the reprisal for past harm done; but, there are times when the blood of the avenger is so hot that it is quickly satisfied. Regardless of the way it is achieved, author William Shakespeare has wrote about this desire in many of his works; most notably, in his tragic masterpiece, Hamlet. While grieving for his dead father, he receives a vision from that noble man detailing how, when, and why he was murdered by none other than his own brother, Claudius, Hamlet’s uncle and now stepdad. As the play moves on, Hamlet literally cuts his way through the court killing all who stand in the way of his true enemy in order to avenge his father’s death. By the end of the play, readers walk away with the knowledge of how the corrupting desire for revenge spills out like blood dropped on the floor coloring everything in its hellish hue.
