3 Charles Lutwidge Dodgson
Was born 27 January 1832, died 14 January 1898. Pen name Lewis Carroll, was an English writer, logician, mathematician, photographer and Anglican deacon. Most famous writings are «Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland», «Through the Looking-Glass», «The Hunting of the Snark» of the genre of literary nonsense.

4 He is noted for his facility at word play, fantasy and logic.
Dodgson the third child in the family, was born in the small village. Charles’ father was the Archdeacon of Richmond. Charles was to develop an ambiguous relationship with his father’s values and with the English Church.

During his early youth, Dodgson was educated at home. At the age of seven, he read books such as «The Pilgrim’s Progress». At the age of twelve, he was sent to Richmond Grammar School. In 1846 Dodgson entered Rugby School. He was unhappy there.

7 Charles Dodgson was about 6 feet tall, had curly brown hair and blue eyes. He suffered a fever, was deaf in one ear. The stammer was a significant part of the image of Dodgson. He caricatured himself as the Dodo in «Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland».

8 Dodgson has traditionally been regarded as politically and personally conservative. The Reverend W. Tuckwell, in his Reminiscences of Oxford (1900), regarded him as «austere, shy, precise, absorbed in mathematical reverie, watchfully tenacious of his dignity, stiffly conservative in political, theological, theory, his life mapped out in squares like Alice’s landscape».

9 Being young Dodgson wrote poetry and short stories, to the family magazine «Mischmasch». Between 1854 and 1856 his work appeared in the national publications «The Comic Times» and «The Train», in the magazines «Whitby Gazette» and the «Oxford Critic». After 1850 he wrote puppet plays for his siblings’ entertainment.

In 1856 «Solitude» appeared under the authorship of «Lewis Carroll». Lewis was the anglicised form of Ludovicus, the Latin for Lutwidge, and Carroll an Irish surname similar to the Carolus, comes the name Charles. «Charles Lutwidge» translated as «Carolus Ludovicus». This was translated as «Carroll Lewis», to make «Lewis Carroll».

11 In 1856 Dean Henry Liddell arrived at Christ Church, bringing with him his young family. Dodgson became close friends with Liddell’s wife Lorina and their children, particularly the sisters Lorina, Edith, and Alice Liddell.

Friendship with the Liddell family was an important part of his life. On 4 July 1862 Dodgson told the story to Alice Liddell and she begged him to write it down. Dodgson eventually presented her with a handwritten, illustrated manuscript entitled «Alice’s Adventures Under Ground» in November 1864.

The work was published as «Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland» in It was a great success. The fame of his alter ego «Lewis Carroll» soon spread around the world. In 1871 published «Trough the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There». His father had died in 1868.

14 In 1876 Dodgson produced «The Hunting of the Snark», a fantastical «nonsense» poem. In 1895 produced a tale of the fairy siblings «Sylvie and Bruno». Carroll Entwines two plots set in two alternative worlds.

In 1856 Dodgson took up the new art form of photography. He soon excelled at the art. Dodgson made many studies of young girls, men, women, boys, landscapes, skeletons, statues, paintings and trees. He had established studio. He stopped taking photographs because keeping his studio working was too time-consuming.

Dodgson invented «The Wonderland Postage-Stamp Case» in 1889. 17 Dodgson’s existence remained little changed over the remaining twenty years of his life, throughout his growing wealth and fame. The only known occasion on which he travelled was a trip to Russia in He died of pneumonia following influenza on 14 January 1898 in Guildford.

Charles Lutwidge Dodgson is my favorite writer. His books bring much miracle and kindness to our childhood, do our life more wonderful. He was a versatile, and unusual man. He did a lot of inventions. He wrote many works in mathematics, wonderful books and made discoveries. I think, he was a great person.
