New Unit: Population Studies
L/O: To understand why we study population, and describe how global population has changed over time. Starter: On your iPad use the app ‘Uni Counters’. Write at least 3 things you find interesting about the world’s population from this app. Extension: Suggest why this might not be accurate.
2
What do we already know? In pairs, brainstorm anything and everything you know about population on some GOOS. Consider the following: Why might people move to live in different places? How the worlds population has changed? What areas of the world do you think have the most people and the least people and why?

Put these numbers in order from highest to lowest
Put these numbers in order from highest to lowest. What do you think they might mean? 1,000,000,000 500,000,000 1,600,000,000 7,000,000,000 2,000,000,000 4,000,000,000 5,000,000,000 545,000,000 610,000,000 3,000,000,000 6,000,000,000 Remember to look carefully at the number of zeros in each number!

8
Graph Analysis Describe this graph in ONE sentence.
Starter: This graph shows… Extension: give reasons for the rapid growth since the 1940s
9
Mapping Activity Use the blank map and Google Earth to locate and label the top ten countries with the largest populations. Write a generalisation (one or two basic describing sentences) for the distribution of global population based on this map. Remember to use regions (Northern/Southern Hemisphere, Continents, Compass directions). Starter: The majority of the population lives… Ext: Do you think this will change? Why/why not?
