1
Global Population Patterns Studying Ecumenes
Ecumene : Land where people have made their permanent home, and to all work areas that are considered occupied and used for economic purpose.
2
Origin of Ecumenes Humans truly are “creatures of their environment”. The location we live and work is dependent in the interplay of 4 factors: Economic- resources available , from subsistence to capitalism Enivironmental –climatic conditions , availability of food and water Political-Government/Rule Social-Cultural ties, religious beliefs, personal values Ecumenes evolve unique characteristics based on the interrealtionships between each factor.
3
Function of Ecumenes Each ecumene has a dominant function or an economic activity that is responsible for its existence. Examples include: Government Capital Resource Center Manufacturing Center Innovation Center Tourist Destination Cultural Hearth
4
Canada has 5 Major Ecumenes
West Coast Prairies Southern Ontario & Quebec The Near North Atlantic Canada All of Canada’s Ecumenes are ECONOMIC in function, meaning they were settled for economic reasons.
5
The Far North Far North Canada’s far north is populated
But distribution/density is so low that important decisions are rarely made in it’s favour Due to isolation, cultural practices and government decisions, the Quality of life in Canada’s far North are equivilent to the Developing world Check out the indicators
6
Function of Ecumenes Ex.
The function often changes over time where the ecumene shifts its economic focus with changing local and international demands. Ex. West Coast Resources Tourism/Resource Prairie Agriculture Energy Extraction/Agriculture East Coast Fishery Energy Extraction/ Fishery Ontario/ Quebec Resources Manufacturing Near North Still Resources ! Far North Subsistence (traditional ways)
7
Canada’s Northern Stats
Life expectancy in the Inuit regions (Inuit Nunangat) is 70.8 years. This is about 10 years lower than in the rest of Canada where it is 80.6 years.
13
only four of 10 young adults living on reserves across the country have finished high school.
seven out of 10 for off-reserve aboriginals and nine out of 10 for non-aboriginals.
14
How Do First Nations Living Conditions Represent a Disparity?
15
Global Ecumenes Not all Ecumenes are as uniform as Canada’s. The western world is dominated by Commercial Economies which usually form around resources that can be bought and sold in market. Others are subsistence economies where goods are merely exchanged between kinship groups. Becoming rarer every day! Or planned economies which are associated with communist societies where all production and distribution of goods are government controlled. All becoming rare! As the type of economy changes so does the settlement and layout of urban space.
