1 Welcome to Year 1!

2 Thank you for coming The purpose of this meeting is to welcome you to Year 1 and inform you about what your child will be learning this term. This year we will be working hard to continue improving communication with parents. Please speak to your class teacher if you have any queries, the best time to do this is after school.

5 Timetable – Year 1

6 Timetable – Year 1 In a carousel we have a number of working areas:
First is a focused activity group that works with the class teacher on Maths or English. Second is an independent activity following on from the work done with the Class teacher. Third is a focused activity led by the Teaching assistant The final area of the carousel is called Classroom activities. These made include construction, creative, topic related, role play and outdoor areas that will have independent activities from the children to interact with across the day.

8 The Canonbury Curriculum
All our topics follow the ‘Canonbury Curriculum’ that covers the National Curriculum (2014). The topics are both cross curricular and creative. The handout shows a brief outline of some of the areas of the curriculum. Topics can last for half a term or a whole term.

The curriculum includes: English and Maths Science History and Geography Art and Design Design and Technology Music Computing Physical Education Spanish Religious Education

10 British Values We are continuing to learn about British Values. The main areas are… DEMOCRACY THE RULE OF LAW INDIVIDUAL LIBERTY MUTUAL RESPECT TOLERANCE OF THOSE WITH DIFFERENT FAITH AND BELIEFS They will be taught mainly through assemblies, circle times and through topic lessons.

11 Forthcoming Assemblies and trips Assemblies/Parent Workshop Trips
There will be a Christmas Pantomime for parents and carers at the end of the term. This will be on the morning of 18th December 2017. Trip to The Highbury Wildlife Garden (tbc)

12 Website The website is now one of our most important ways of communicating with parents and carers. There will be key dates on the calendar: Meetings, Trips, Assemblies etc. Teachers will update the website with photos of your child’s learning at least twice a term.

13 Routines – The Start of the Day
School Gates open at 8.30 am for children and parents. Parents are responsible for and should stay with their children until 8.50. At 8.50 the designated School Leader rings the first bell – children line up. Class Teachers will open the door at 8.55 when the second bell is rung. Children can enter the classroom and settle into class. Register is completed by 9.05 (any late comers after this time must report to the office)

14 Wet Mornings We define wet mornings as when there is heavy downpour and we consider it unreasonable to ask the children to remain outside. When the rain is a light drizzle or "spitting", the usual "dry" arrangements will apply. The system for wet mornings is as follows: Year 1 will be able to enter their classrooms at 8.50 using their usual class entrances.

15 Guided Reading and reading at home
Please aim to hear your child read for 15 minutes every night. Encourage them to use their phonics' skills to help with unfamiliar words and discuss the content of what they have just read with you. Book bags/Rucksacks should be in school every day. Please aim to complete Reading records every night as it provides a home/school dialogue. Your child will also be able to take a library book home on a week’s loan.

16 Homework Homework in Year 1 supports the work covered in class. It is given out on Fridays to be completed and returned on Wednesday. Any homework returned after this day will, unfortunately, not be marked. In addition, your child will also be given a log-in and password to access Mathletics from home. This will be stuck on the inner cover of their homework books as soon as we get them. From time to time we will set Mathletics as homework; however, children are also free to access this site as and when they like and work towards earning certificates!

17 Healthy Packed Lunches
Reminder: Please ensure your child’s packed lunch has healthy contents. No nuts or chocolate are allowed. When we are on school trips, please ensure your child has a healthy lunch and a bottle of water. If your child has a club after school, please ensure that your child has a healthy snack (e.g. fruit, rice cakes, etc)

18 Routines – The End of the Day
School finishes for Year 1 at 3:20pm. If you are collecting other children, the office must be informed. If you would like someone else to collect your child, you must inform the office.

19 Snacks Daily fruit is provided for all children in Key Stage 1 to eat at playtime. No other snack is allowed - this includes fruit wrapped like sweets, cereal bars, biscuits , sweets. For Birthdays we are no longer giving out cakes or sweets to the children to achieve our healthy schools status. Children who's birthday it is will be given a badge for the day and a present at school. No Nuts!

20 Canonbury Golden Rules
Always be kind and caring. Always try your best. Always speak politely to each other and listen while others are talking. Always follow instructions given by a member of staff. Always look after the school environment.

21 Going for Gold Canonbury has a school-wide system to encourage positive learning behaviour and support improvement when needed. Teachers are looking for opportunities to catch all pupils showing ‘gold’ learning behaviour, including pupils who have learning needs, so that it is achievable by all during an appropriate period of time according to age and development. Each child in the class has a named pocket with 5 cards: 1 Gold 1 Green 3 Amber 1 Red Please see the Canonbury Behaviour Policy for full details on responsibilities and expectations for behaviour.

School uniform is compulsory and can be purchased from Rough Cut Casuals Ltd at 16 Chapel Market, Islington N1 9EZ, or online at

25 Hair and Jewellery Where possible long hair should be tied back during school time. Head bands and scarves should be navy blue. No jewellery other than a watch and/or stud earrings can be worn. Any other jewellery worn will be taken in by class teachers and returned directly to parents at the end of the day.

26 How can you help your child?
Ensuring their child’s first name and surname are on all uniform items (including book bags) -either as a label or written clearly using permanent pen. Encouraging children to dress independently. Ensuring their child can manage footwear independently – if they wear lace-up shoes to school, it is important that they are able to tie laces themselves; otherwise footwear with straps is preferable, especially during PE.
