consider set out, legibility etc.

2 1. I sent a slave // to help the old man. that he might help
I sent requires ‘help’ to be imperfect subjunctive (vide tabulam magicam)

3 2. We all want to find out // who had won in the election.
want – volo, cupio question ‘who’ is quis (p.27) had won is pluperfect but I.Q. so needs subjunctive (‘by sense’) comitia: convention (-a, -orum)

4 3. If the envoys had not been killed in the camp, //
the general would not have attacked the town. conditional would = subjunctives x 2 tense: in the past = 2 x pluperfect (never perfect subjunctives here) must use nisi careful about passive verbs: nominative plus ablative (of instrument or agent) nominative = envoys; the general

5 4. They ordered the old man // to threw the boy’s book into the fire.
iubēre + infinitive imperāre + dative + ut/ne + subjunctive (tabulā magicā) tab. mag.: he ordered = past; ergo throw must be imperfect. nb: liber, libri (like ager, magister) not liberī
