Chemical Properties Lesson 4 Unit 2 Matter and its Properties

2 READING GUIDE ESSENTIAL QUESTION: What Properties determine how substances react with each other? Vocabulary: Chemical property Reactivity Acid Base Neutralization

3 What are chemical properties?
A chemical property is the ability of a substance to combine with or change into one or more new substances. Reactivity is how easily one substance reacts with another substance. The lack of reactivity is also a chemical property. Flammability is the ability of a substance to burn or ignite, causing fire or combustion. Oxidation is the ability of a substance to react with oxygen to form rust.

4 What are chemical properties?

5 What are chemical properties of acids and bases?
One way to describe matter is to classify it as an acid or a base. Lemon juice and vinegar are acids. Acids usually have a sour taste. Vinegar is sour because it contains acetic acid. Baking soda is considered a base. Bases usually taste bitter. Indicators are materials that change color in the presence of acids and bases. Each substance has a pH value to determine whether it is a acid or a base. The pH scale measures the strengths of acids and bases.

6 What are chemical properties of acids and bases?

7 What are chemical properties of acids and bases?
The Properties of Acid The Property of Base Acids make blue litmus paper turn pink or red. Acids release hydrogen ions (H+) in a solution, Acids can react with metals and limestone. Acids can burn the skin Bases turn red litmus paper blue. Bases release hydroxide (OH-) in solutions. Bases, such as soaps, have a slippery feeling. Many acids and bases are used as cleaning products. (See figure 27)

8 What are chemical properties of acids and bases?
Neutralization occurs when acids and bases react with each other to form water and substances called salts. In neutralization, the acid and the base cancel each other’s properties.

9 How do chemical and physical properties compare?
Chemical Properties

10 Summary: A chemical property is observed only as a substance changes identity Acids and bases can be classified by their chemical properties Physical and chemical properties are used to describe type of matter.

11 Homework: Short Research
Research about acid rain. Then, make a poster illustrating what it is. How it affects lakes, fish, trees, and other parts of the environment. Show any prevention presently being done.
