FORESHADOWING What is foreshadowing?
The use of hints or clues to suggest events that will occur later in the plot. What is the purpose of foreshadowing? To build suspense and dramatic tension in the story.

With your partner… Think of Jonas’ experiences in the book so far. Identify one example of a time you suspect Lois Lowry uses foreshadowing. What do you believe the event foreshadows? Explain your reasoning.

Generally, anything that represents itself and stands for something else. Usually a symbol is something concrete -- such as an object, action, character, or place – that represents something more abstract. However, symbols can be much more complex. Allusion A direct or indirect reference to something outside the text (such as an event, book, myth, place, or work of art.) Allusions can be historical, literary, or religious.
