1
Cleaning up an Acid Spill With a Base
By: Ben Jenkyn
2
Chemical equation HCl + NaOH -> H20 + NaCl
(Acid + Base) -> (water + salt) The type of reaction is neutralization When the acid and base are mixed together it will always form water
3
Acids have a low PH Where as Bases have a high PH By adding the base to the acid you can balance the PH making the acid safe to clean
4
Depending on how bad the spill is there are different things you should do.
If it’s a very big spill then you should evacuate and call 911. If it’s not very big you shouldn’t ignore it, clean it as fast as possible. One possible base to clean it up with is baking soda. Although to be on the safe side you should call 911
5
Robert Boyle Robert Boyle was the man who discovered why acids and
bases act the way they do and that if you combine them you get water. Also that acids Taste sour and bases taste Bitter.
