Welcome to Year 3 Hello and welcome to Year 3! We are very excited to be working with your children this year and we are looking forward to getting to know you all!

R.E Religious Education is integral to our school life here at Sacred Heart and we make it a focus of our everyday learning through prayer, scripture and traditions. This term we will be looking at ‘Beginning with the Church’. We will be looking at how the Church welcomes people into the community. This includes: Understand what a Sacrament is Signs and symbols in the Church Baptism The Eucharist The Jewish faith and other religions.
4
Literacy In Literacy we will be reading various books, such as Charlie and the chocolate factory and the Stone Age boy. Through these books we will be exploring the vocabulary, language, imagery and literary techniques used. We also look at grammar used and children will be able to use this as a prompt for their own creative writing later on. We love to create a fun learning atmosphere and try and bring the books to life for the children, which was seen through our fantastic ‘Charlie Day’, where the children experienced a day of performing scenes from the book with an outside Drama company, which they thoroughly enjoyed!
5
Numeracy In numeracy we will be using a Concrete-Pictorial- Abstract approach through the White Rose Maths Hub scheme whilst still using our aspects of Singapore Maths too. Through our numeracy lessons will be focusing on a mastery approach too, making sure the children have in depth knowledge on what they are learning. This term we will be learning: Place Value Addition and Subtraction Multiplication and Division
6
Topic In year 3 we are great investigators and our topic this term is Ancient Egypt. At the moment we have been learning about where Egypt is in the world through looking at maps. For the rest of the term we will be looking at timelines, finding out interesting facts about daily life, looking at the River Nile and why it was important and mummification!

General Information P.E
Please make sure your child’s P.E kit is named and in school. Their kits are expected to be in school and they should participate unless a valid written reason is given. During the winter months we would advise for them to have a green tracksuit in school. The children will participate in outdoor games on Thursday and indoor P.E on Tuesday for 3J and Friday for 3A . Homework We will have a Literacy, Numeracy, R.E or Topic task that will be set on a Friday. This homework should be returned by the following Wednesday. If they have completed this prior to this day they are of course welcome to bring it in earlier.

Spelling and Times tables
We will give out spellings and times tables with the homework on Fridays. Spellings will be tested the following Wednesday for both classes. Times tables will be tested the following Friday for both classes. Children who score 50 out of 50 will be moved onto the next level. We want your children to have a full grasp of the times table they have studied before they move on. Please remember that we are here to help you and if you wish to meet either of us to discuss matters regarding your child please contact us to arrange a mutually convenient time.
