The flood in Tabasco and Chiapas in 2007
2
When did it happen? From October 28 to December 15.
3
Geography The state of Tabasco is the one with the greatest hydrological complexity of Mexico, because it is constituted by a wide coastal plain that drain the currents coming from the south of the territory, particularly of the state of Chiapas and Guatemala. From there come the two main rivers, the Grijalva and the Usumacinta. Both rivers are united in one only before its opening; This region constitutes a great marsh or creek, known as the Centennial Swamps, of enormous biological diversity.
4
Geography The abundant hydrological resources of the State of Chiapas represent approximately 30% of the total of the country. In total, it has 110,000 hectares of inland waters, 260 kilometers of coastline, a patrimonial sea of 96,000 km2, 75,230 hectares of estuaries and 10 lagoon systems. The main rivers are: EL GRIJALVA and USUMACINTA (the longest in Latin America). Both form a single fluvial system.
5
What happen? Rainfall in the Grijalva basin ranged between 150 and 250 mm. By increasing the amount of water that was falling in the Grijalva basin in the north of Chiapas - where such important dams as La Angostura, Chicoasén, Malpaso and Peñitas are found, which generate most of the electricity used-Increase the flow of riversin Mexico. Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) reported that it would release the Peñitas dam, the closest to the territory of Tabasco, because the dam was receiving more water than it could receive, 669 cubic meters per second that increased the next day to 1500, Causing an increase of more than one meter in the level of the Grijalva river in the Plains of Tabasco.
6
Part of the state of Tabasco was submerged under water, while in Chiapas the rains had not ended and in Tabasco it had begun to rain as well.
7
Facts The Tabasco flood is considered the most serious natural disaster faced by the Mexican state of Tabasco in 50 years. The hydraulic regulation system of the city of Villahermosa had been replaced by commercial centers and infrastructure and urban subdivisions To the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) revealed that the coasts of the Gulf of Mexico would be especially sensitive to the effects of climate change that is underway, with a 2 ° C increase in the global temperature of the plan The valley that surrounds the Grijalva before reaching Villahermosa, is sectioned with plots of crops and grasslands that have replaced the rainforest. For the purposes of human activity that is not planned in an area considered strategic because of the amount of natural resources it possesses - tropical forests, oil and natural gas deposits, minerals, water - is added the omission of governments with regard to The prevention of natural disasters in areas most affected by tropical storms.
