1 Science and Technology
Essential Questions: How do new ideas change the way people live?

2 Vocabulary Biomedical (biology and medicine) – Having to do with the intersection of medicine and the natural sciences, such as biology and biochemistry Robotics (robots) – The science and technology of robot design, manufacture, and use

3 Vocabulary Startup (New Company) – A new company formed by an entrepreneur

4 Science and Technology
For decades, Texas has been a leader in the aerospace, computer, and medical industries.

5 Science and Technology
Since the 1960s, the Johnson Space Center (JSC) in Houston has carried out or sponsored programs developing products for space flight and military uses. The JSC has also helped create new medical technology and lets Texas companies work in its research facilities and with its personnel to create new high-tech products.

6 Science and Technology
Satellite navigation PS4 joystick Smoke alarms Portable Cordless Vacuums Memory Foam LED lights Freeze Dried Foods Fire-Resistant Reinforcement Many of the products and procedures pioneered by the Johnson Space Center have been used by private companies to develop consumer products.

7 Science and Technology
In the 1960s, Texas Instruments has produced semiconductors (the technology that is the foundation for electronics and computers used throughout the world) and scientific calculators.

8 Science and Technology
Michael Dell was a 19-year-old college student at the University of Texas when he founded a company that dramatically changed how personal computers were sold. Dell has grown into one of the largest computer makers in the world.

9 What customer service approach did Dell use that enhanced his company's popularity and success?

10 Science and Technology
Dr. Denton Cooley, one of the pioneers of heart transplant surgery, founded the Texas Heart Institute, where researchers study the use of stem cells to heal damaged hearts.

11 Houston’s Texas Medical Center includes 21 hospitals, three units concerned with public health, 14 universities or professional schools, and eight institutes devoted to research. Which of these institutions would be involved directly in personal medical care?

12 Science and Technology
Houston Texas Medical Center Texas has become a major center for advances in medical research. The Texas Heart Institute and the Institute for Cancer Care Innovation have made advances in health care and research. The largest medical complex in the world, the Texas Medical Center, devotes a total of about $3 billion annually to research. How has research done in Texas improved medical treatment?

13 Science and Technology
University programs called business incubators provide assistance to entrepreneurs and help connect business owners to investors. The Austin Technology Incubator has sponsored more than 250 new high-tech companies, and Baylor University’s Innovative Business Accelerator allows new companies to collaborate with local banks and economic agencies.

14 Science and Technology
The Texas government has actively promoted technology companies through the Texas Emerging Technology Fund, which provides state grants to research and development groups. State and local governments may also lower taxes to attract new businesses or make improvements to help businesses operate more easily.

15 Science and Technology
New companies formed by an entrepreneur are called startups. Richardson, Texas, is home to the Telecom Corridor, which has attracted a number of telecommunication and technology firms.

16 This Austin researcher is working on a project involving a new kind of technology that aims to create microscopic machines that can be used in health care and other fields. Why has the Texas state government helped new businesses start up?

17 Science and Technology
Private industry in Texas makes its own research and development efforts, and some companies are given tax credits by the government for certain kinds of research and development (R&D) spending. Local organizations such as the Chamber of Commerce have opened business incubators and provided help free of charge.

18 This video explores the population boom of Texas, in part as a result of the lure of employment the state offered.
