Cellular Respiration Process
Step 1 – GLYCOLYSIS - occurs in the cytoplasm Glucose is broken down releasing 2 ATPs (energy) and 2 Pyruvic acids. Aerobic or anaerobic?

Step 2 – Kreb’s Cycle – occurs in the mitochondria
Carbon coming off – needs oxygen to produce the carbon dioxide. We call this Aerobic Respiration – meaning with oxygen Krebs cycle produces 2 ATPs (energy) Aerobic or anaerobic?

Step 3 – Electron Transport Chain
This occurs in the mitochondria also. The electron transport chain uses the high-energy electrons from the Krebs cycle to convert ADP into ATP. Aerobic or anaerobic?

Anaerobic Respiration
Without Oxygen Two Kinds: 1. Alcoholic Fermentation 2. Lactic Acid Fermentation

What is Fermentation? Fermentation releases energy from food molecules by producing ATP in the absence of oxygen.

Alcoholic Fermentation
Pyruvic acid makes alcohol as a waste product in producing energy – yeast and some bacteria do this.

Lactic Acid Fermentation
Pyruvic acid produces Lactic acid and energy – This happens when a cell accumulates lots of pyruvic acid from glycolysis – too much before it can get to the Kreb’s cycle. Oftentimes this happens to athletes when they begin to work out – creating a burning sensation in the muscles.
