Unit 6- The Mole:

2 Holy Mole! What is a mole? The mole is the SI unit for amount of substance. Other SI units (time=sec, length=meter, mass=kg)

3 Holy Mole! A mole (abbreviated mol) is the amount of a substance that contains as many particles as there are atoms in exactly 12 grams of carbon-12.

The mole is a counting unit (like a dozen, pair, case) 1 mol = 6.02  1023 items (Items: atoms, molecules, formula units) A very amount!!!! LARGE

6 HOW LARGE IS IT??? 1 mole of hockey pucks would equal the mass of the moon! 1 mole of basketballs would fill a bag the size of the earth! 1 mole of pennies would cover the Earth 1/4 mile deep!

This means that exactly 12 g of carbon-12 contains × 1023 carbon-12 atoms.
