2
Endocrine glands The endocrine system is the collection of glands of an organism that secrete hormones directly into the circulatory system to be carried towards distant target organs. Hormones -a regulatory substance produced in an organism and transported in tissue fluids such as blood to stimulate specific cells or tissues into action. They are chemical messengers of the body that transfers information from one set of cells to another.

5
Hypothalamus Location-basal part of diencephalon in forebrain.
Two types- Releasing hormones and inhibiting hormones Hormones whose main purpose is to control the release of other hormones, either by stimulating or inhibiting their release .
6
Hypothalamus Releasing hormones Inhibiting hormones
Stimulates the secretion of pituitary hormones Inhibits the secretion of pituitary hormones GnRH- Gonadotropin releasing hormones Somatostatin GnRH stimulates the release of gonadotrophins from pituitary Somatostatin inhibits the release of growth hormone from pituitary

8
Pituitary gland Sellatursica
9
Pituitary gland Master gland Trophic hormones It controls the activity of many other hormones of endocrine system. It works by receiving message to release the required hormone that causes the manufacture and release of the hormone. Two parts Adenohypophysis Neurohypophysis
10
Pituitary gland
11
Pituitary gland Pituitary Adenohypophysis
Pars distalis (anterior pituitary) Growth hormone Prolactin TSH Adenocorticotrophic hormone Luteinizing hormone Follicle stimulating hormone Pars intermedia Neurohypophysis (posterior pituitary) Stores and releases oxytocin and vasopressin

13
Pineal gland Located-dorsal side of forebrain
Secretes-hormone-melatonin Functions 1-regulates diurnal-day to day routine 2-influences metabolism, pigmentation and menstrual cycle. 3-influences our defense capability

15
Thyroid gland Largest endocrine gland Location-in front of wind pipe
Hormone-thyroxine-iodine based Goiter Role of thyroxine 1-BMR regulation 2-support RBC formation 3-control metabolism of carbohydrates, proteins and fats. 4-maintenance of water and electrolyte balance.

17
Parathyroid gland 4 in number
Location-on posterior side of thyroid gland Regulates level of calcium ion in blood Hormone-parathormone Deficiency - tetany

19
Pancreas Hormones-insulin & glucagon Secreted by islets of langerhans
Maintains blood-sugar level Diabetes

21
Adrenal gland Location-at the top of each kidney Hormone-adrenaline Role of adrenaline 1-defence of the body in emergency situation 2-salt balance

Thymus gland Location-partly in neck and partly in thorax
Hormone-thymosin Production center of lymphocytes
