Knowing Uganda means knowing its: Geographical location: Sits across the Equator, East Africa region, African continent Latitudes 10 S, 40 N Longitudes 31 E, 350 E Greenwich Meridian Size: sq. km Land surface: sq. km

Border length: 2698km. Commences in Kisoro at the highest point on Mt. Sabyinyo, Boundary Pillar No. 1 Neighbors: Connected by land and air to its neighbors: South Sudan to the North Tanzania to the South

Rwanda to the South West Note: All, except Rwanda are bigger in size than Uganda. Population: 37million Ethnic (Indigenous) Communities (65) National Anthem

Flag – Black identifies Uganda as a black nation of Africa; Yellow, abundant sunshine; Red, blood brotherhood with rest of Africa and globe; Crested Crane, national bird at the center, raised leg signifying Uganda is on the move, not stationary/stagnant

8 PRELUDE… Coat of Arms/Official Insignia – signifies Uganda’s identity, aspirations and economic activities; Crested Crane, plumage includes all the national colors – friendly, gentle, peace loving; Kob, symbolizes abundant wildlife in Uganda; Spear and Shield, traditional tools of defence; Sun, abundant in Uganda; Drum, cultural heritage of the

11 RESOURCES (NATURE’S GIFTS TO) UGANDA
A resource is raw material in any form that is yet to be turned into useable commodity. The addition of value to resource is by man for own consumption. Man too is resource – human resource. In fact the most crucial factor . Uganda’s resources can be grouped into: Vegetation

Savannah grasslands. Great “ranching corridor”. Capable of holding millions of livestock. Soils – Arable, fertile, needing little fertilizers. Forestation Rainfall – Quite sufficient.

Two high peaks, with dry periods in between. Mountains – mighty ones like Rwenzori, Elgon.Muhabura,Sabyinyo and Others… Water bodies – natural and fresh Lakes – Victoria, Albert, Kyoga. Others… plenty of aquatic life – fish, hippos, snakes, frogs, crocodiles…

17 UNDERDEVELOPMENT CHALLENGES
Despite these resources, Uganda is backward and underdeveloped. Signs that Uganda is backward and underdeveloped economically: High unemployment High percentage of people below absolute people Low industrial capacity-excess capacity Dependency on raw materials, High population growth Low income per capita Low literacy rate

Unprocessed Signs that Uganda is socially backward and underdeveloped: Low life expectancy High infant mortality Low literacy levels Inadequate clean water Poor infrastructure Poor nutrition
