2. Butterfly Eggs
Butterflies lay hundreds of eggs.

3. Caterpillars
The butterfly eggs hatch into wormlike larvae called caterpillars. As a caterpillar grows, it molts or sheds its outer skin, several times.

4. Chrysalis
The last time a caterpillar molts, it seals itself inside a tough shell, or chrysalis. Inside the chrysalis the caterpillar’s body slowly changes.

5. Adult Butterfly
Finally an adult butterfly breaks out of the chrysalis.
