1
Evolution of Atomic Theory Project (200 points)
Mrs. Lively PreAP Chemistry
2
Your Job… Working in groups of 2-3, investigate how the atomic theory has evolved from ancient Greeks to the present
3
Your task… 1. Research 2. Create take good notes
get a grasp of information cite your sources for all projects, including pictures 2. Create a model of the atom from your time period/topic (either 2D or 3D) explain your model in detail and tell how this model demonstrates the atomic theories of the day If your model is edible: bring enough for the entire class, with serving utensils/plates/napkins, etc.
4
Your task, continued 3. Produce (2 things)
1. a creative presentation (powerpoint, prezi, etc.) to share with the rest of the class that will take us back in time and show us the important contributions of that person 2. a “baseball card” of your scientist—follow the directions on the handout provided This is basically a summary of the information you are including in your presentation, so keep track of your main points!
5
What do I need to cover? Full name of scientist with birth/death dates
Major Achievements Time frame of their work Major ideas/philosophies/influences Inventions they created Info about their atomic model with pictures or diagrams Published materials/books/research papers/journals Anything else the group finds interesting about the person, their personal life, their work, their family, etc. You should keep track of sources and DOCUMENT all of them to turn in with your presentation, baseball card, and model
6
Topics… Aristotle and Democritus Ernest Rutherford J.J. Thomson
John Dalton Erwin Schrodinger Werner Heisenberg Louis de Broglie Robert Millikan Niels Bohr James Chadwick …and many more!
7
…and finally… Use at minimum, 4-5 sources, well documented in APA or MLA format All parts of your project (ppt, card, model, etc.) can be cited on the same slide at the end of your Ppt or Prezi PowerPoint presentation—4-5 slides, NOT including a Title page or Reference slide The in-class presentation should be between 3-5 minutes, and include EVERYONE in your group!
8
Models should be no larger than 2 ft3, and can be made from edible, shelf stable materials such as candy. Edible models, if eaten as part of your presentation, must be photographed before taken apart. Baseball cards use a 4 x 6 inch index card or the equivalent—if you lose the 1 provided, you must come up with a replacement! A grading rubric will be provided for all 3 parts of the project (presentation, card, & model)
