3 Which academic policies are you aware of?

4 F, WU, I WN: Never attended, certified by COA (commencement of attendance) Do not permit students whom you assign WN to attend classes. Caution: Irreversible grade, has serious financial aid impact F : Failing grade, attends classes to the end, takes the final exam WU : Stop attending classes prior to the final exam week (including missing the final exam) I (incomplete): Passing grade, reasonable expectation that the student can pass, discretion of instructor. Incomplete Grades may be given by the instructor only when there is a reasonable expectation that a student can successfully complete the requirements of the course. This grade is a privilege and not a right. An “I” grade must be removed within one month after the beginning of the following semester, or the grade of “F” will be recorded.

when an undergraduate student receives the grade of “D,” “F” or a WU grade and the student subsequently retakes the same course at the same college and receives a grade of “C” or better, the initial grade will no longer be computed into the cumulative grade point average. The initial grade will remain on the transcript. The number of credits that can be deleted from the grade point average under this policy shall be limited to 16 for the duration of the student’s undergraduate enrollment in institutions of The City University of New York.

6 Policy on Repeating Courses
Fall 2017 Catalog pages 29-30 You may repeat only those courses in which you received a grade of “D,” “F,” “WA,” “WF” or “WU” regardless of the requirements of your curriculum. You may not repeat a credit bearing course within the major more than once without written permission from the chairperson of your major department or her or his designee. You may not repeat courses which are a prerequisite to or the equivalent of a prerequisite to more advanced work you have completed

Remedial standard: Students are permitted a maximum of two attempts to complete remedial reading, writing, or mathematics. Credits Attempted Minimum GPA 0 – 12 1.50 12.5 – 24 1.75 24.5 – upward 2.00 12-Credit Remedial Policy Fall 2017 Catalog page 29 Remedial work must take precedence over all other work; therefore, developmental courses must be completed before the student may progress beyond 12 credits.

9 How do students appeal a grade?

10 Procedure for appealing a letter grade A,B,C,D,F
Fall 2017 Catalog page 30 Student must attempt to resolve with the instructor. Student must attempt to resolve with chair of the department. Student fills out an appeal and submit to the Registrar. The appeal is reviewed by the department’s appeal’s committee. The committee’s decision is final. Procedure for Appealing Academic Dismissal Appeals are submitted to the Committee on Course and Standards.

11 How do you advise the student whether or not to withdraw from your class?

12 Advising students whether or not to withdraw from your class
Discuss student’s current grade objectively. Give a projection based on if the student continues in the current learning pattern. Give a projection based on if the student makes changes in learning pattern. Recommend that the student speaks to a financial aid advisor. Recommend that the student speaks to an academic advisor about the implication of dropping the class, e.g. delayed graduation, must also drop co-requisite, out of step with the academic program. Students may not withdraw from remedial courses.
