1 Vocabulary 1 Electronic Mail which allows individuals with an account to send messages to another person with an account. IRC: Internet Relay Chat was developed in 1988 by Jarkko Oikarien & allows instant online communicating with someone else who is online by typing messages back & forth. BBS: Bulletin Board Service allows a user to participate in a dicussion group.

2 HTTP: Hypertext Transfer Protocol is used for handling the transmission of pages between a web server and a web browser. FTP: File Transfer Protocol is used to rapidly transfer files. TELNET: A program used on networks such as the internet to allow users to remotely log on to a server on the network.

3 GOPHER: One of the first widespread internet browsing services.
INTRANET: A network used by a single organization & only accessible by authorized users. FIREWALL: A network security system that prevents unauthorized network access.

4 Extranet: An extended intranet that provides various levels of access to authorized members of the public. Online Profiling: A marketing technique that collects online data about consumers. Cookies: Small files that contain information about the web sites an individual has visited.

5 Usenet: A collection of servers that offer Netnews.
Bandwidth: The amount of data & speed at which the data can travel over the transmission media. Client: A computer that accesses a server to request information.

6 DSL: Digital Subscriber Line
Ethernet: A widely used protocol for lans that uses a bus or star topology and connects the network devices by twisted-pair wiring, coaxial cable, or fiber optic cable. Netiquette: The etiquette that should be followed when using a network.

7 Protocol: A standard Topology: The logical arrangement of the nodes on a network. Wireless Networks: A type of network that does not require the use of cables.

8 Network Interface Card: A circuit board that goes into the base unit of a computer or other device in a line. ISP: Internet Service Provider is a company that offers access to the internet for a fee. Web: A series of related web pages
