4 What is a Stakeholder? A stakeholder is someone with an interest or concern in something. In the redevelopment of a local area who would be stakeholders? Government Businesses Locals Groups

5 Slough background Slough is located in Berkshire and has a population of 140,000 people. Racial tensions are high, with only 34.5% being White British. There are no racial enclaves like many other cities – all the different communities are mixed and live together. In the last 100 years there have been large influxs of people from Wales, Scotland, Poland and a growth in the number of Sikh, Hindu and Muslims living in Slough.

9 Urban players in Slough
Local Government – Slough Borough Council – Decides the priorities for the area e.g. what land should be used for. Companies – Enticed by the Slough Regeneration Partnership after the council and building firm agreed to regenerate the town. Environmentalists – The council is responsible for community health by looking after air quality and safety (street lighting, pavements etc) but is challenged due to poor air quality caused by the M4 and Heathrow Airport. Charities – Groups such as Aik Saath work with multi-ethnic communities to improve schools and workplaces. Housing Association – The biggest challenge in Slough is a lack of affordable rental housing and so groups can work to help provide this.
