4 Spotlight on the Health and Social Care Sector
Health (including social care) is one of the UK’s largest sectors, and has grown rapidly in recent years. Between 2013 and 2023, an estimated 41,000 additional jobs are forecast to be created in the Health sector. There are 6,000 employers in the Health sector in Greater Manchester, of which 400 are medium-sized or large. This 7% of employers have a minimum of 50 employees. Finding the Right Fit

6 What is the apprenticeship route into Health and Social Care?
An apprenticeship is a real job with training that will enable you to earn as you learn whilst gaining a nationally recognised qualification The qualifications you gain on an apprenticeship are equivalent to the following GCSE’s and A Levels: Intermediate Level 2 5 GCSE passes at grades A* to C Advanced Level 3 2 A level passes Higher Level 4,5,6 and 7 Foundation degree and above Degree Level 6 and 7 Bachelor’s or master’s degree There are apprenticeship qualifications in the following areas of Health and social care: dental nursing  pharmacy services  health and social care optical retail  emergency care  maternity and paediatric support clinical care  laboratory technician funeral operations and services Finding the Right Fit

7 Case Study: Chelsea is 21 years of age and has a 2 year old daughter. She works as a Care Assistant at Abbotsford Nursing Home in Manchester Chelsea’s day to day job involves helping residents get out of bed in the morning and helping them get washed and dressed. She also helps them at mealtimes and checks their wellbeing each day. Chelsea said that she finds her job very rewarding and said “I love the interaction with the residents and I get a lot of satisfaction knowing that I’ve helped people that really need it.” Finding the Right Fit
